INTRODUCTION
David: Welcome to chineseclass101. I am David.
Echo: 大家好,我是 (Dàjiā hǎo, wǒ shì)Echo。
David: And we are here with series 1, lesson 4 in our elementary set.
Echo: 嗯,初级第四课。(Ń, chūjí dì sì kè.)
David: Yes. So this set is designed just for you if you’ve already got a bit of Mandarin under your belt and you want to take the next step towards fluency.
Echo: Right.
David: So we’ve got a dialogue here Echo. It takes place in a café and it’s between two people. There is some romantic interest going on.
Echo: Hmm their first date maybe.
David: Maybe the first date. It’s pretty colloquial and let’s take a listen to the dialogue.
Echo: But before we do.
David: But before we do, we want to remind you. In addition to listening to our podcasts, make sure you come, sign up for a premium subscription and get your hands on the actual transcripts. That will tell you what you are listening to. It really is a big help.
Echo: Yep.
David: And with that said, let’s go on to the dialogue.
Echo: Let’s go.
DIALOGUE
Aria: 很高兴认识你。(ARIA: Hěn gāoxìng rènshi nǐ.)
田森:我也是!可以给你打电话吗?(TIÁN SĒN: Wǒ yě shì! Kěyǐ gěi nǐ dǎ diànhuà ma?)
Aria: 可以。我的电话号码是911。(ARIA: Kěyǐ. Wǒ de diànhuà hàomǎ shì jiǔ yāo yāo.)
田森:天哪,真的吗?(TIÁN SĒN: Tiān na, zhēn de ma?)
Aria: 对,我是警察。(ARIA: Duì, wǒ shì jǐngchá.)
aAria: Pleased to meet you.
Tian Sen: Me too! Can I give you a call?
Aria: Yes. My telephone number is nine-one-one.
Tian Sen: Good heavens, really?
Aria: Yeah. I'm a cop.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
David: Maybe she already has a boyfriend.
Echo: 我觉得很警察约会很奇怪。(Wǒ juédé hěn jǐngchá yuēhuì hěn qíguài.)
David: You are right. Let’s move on to the vocabulary. We have a bunch of really interesting vocab centered on introducing yourself when meeting people. And now the vocab section.
VOCAB LIST
Echo: 认识。(rènshi.) [natural native speed]
David: To recognize.
Echo: 认识。(rènshi.)[slowly - broken down by syllable]
Echo: 认识。(rènshi.)[natural native speed]
Echo: 电话。(diànhuà.)[natural native speed]
David: Telephone.
Echo: 电话。(diànhuà.)[slowly - broken down by syllable]
Echo: 电话。(diànhuà.)[natural native speed]
Echo: 号码。(hàomǎ.)[natural native speed]
David: Number.
Echo: 号码。(hàomǎ.)[slowly - broken down by syllable]
Echo: 号码。(hàomǎ.)[natural native speed]
Echo: 九一一。(Jiǔ yāo yāo.)[natural native speed]
David: 911.
Echo: 九一一。(Jiǔ yāo yāo.)[slowly - broken down by syllable]
Echo: 九一一。(Jiǔ yāo yāo.)[natural native speed]
Echo: 天呐。(Tiān nà.)[natural native speed]
David: Good, gracious.
Echo: 天呐。(Tiān nà.)[slowly - broken down by syllable]
Echo: 天呐。(Tiān nà.)[natural native speed]
Echo: 警察。(jǐngchá.)[natural native speed]
David: Police.
Echo: 警察。(jǐngchá.)[slowly - broken down by syllable]
Echo: 警察。(jǐngchá.)[natural native speed]
David: So that’s our new vocab. There are some really interesting things here and there is some stuff we want to call your attention to as well. The first is the word number
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Echo: 号码。(hàomǎ.)
David: And we heard this as in telephone number.
Echo: 电话号码。(Diànhuà hàomǎ.)
David: Now Echo, there are a lot of things that have numbers in them. For instance
Echo: 房间号码。(Fángjiān hàomǎ.)
David: Room number.
Echo: 身份证号码。(Shēnfèn zhèng hàomǎ.)
David: Yeah that’s the identity number. Let’s not confuse this with password which is similar.
Echo: 密码。(Mìmǎ.)
David: So we’ve got number
Echo: 号码。(Hàomǎ.)
David: And we have password.
Echo: 密码。(Mìmǎ.)
David: Anything you think is really interesting here vocab wise.
Echo: 九一一。(Jiǔ yāo yāo.)
David: Let’s tackle that in the grammar section because it’s actually a bit complex. We do have the words for police

Lesson focus

Echo: 警察。(Jǐngchá.)
David: Right and if you need to deal with the police, you are going to need a couple of other words as well such as police station.
Echo: 派出所。(Pàichūsuǒ.)
David: Yeah. Now if you’ve asked for the police, you might also want to ask for the fire department.
Echo: 消防队。(Xiāofáng duì.)
David: Right. Those are the two big emergency services. On the other hand, if you run into trouble when you are out on the street and you want to attract help, what should you be saying?
Echo: 救命。(Jiùmìng.)
David: Yeah which is help or save my life literally.
Echo: 救命。(Jiùmìng.)
David: It’s grammar time. Moving into the grammar section, we’ve got two really interesting points we want to make. We are going to talk about numbers in a bit, but first we’d like to talk about what Echo?
Echo: 认识 ,知道 and 了解。(Rènshì, zhīdào and liǎojiě.)
David: Yeah. We are going to go over the difference between recognizing things and knowing them and understanding them.
Echo: 他们是认识,知道 and 了解。(Tāmen shì rènshì, zhīdào and liǎojiě.)
David: Right. The first is
Echo: 认识。(Rènshì.)
David: Use this when you recognize someone or you are familiar with someone.
Echo: 我认识那个明星。(Wǒ rènshì nàgè míngxīng.)
David: I recognize that celebrity.
Echo: 我认识他。(Wǒ rènshì tā.)
David: I recognize him.
Echo: 他认识那个警察。(Tā rènshì nàgè jǐngchá.)
David: He recognizes that police officer. Now the verb to know
Echo: 知道。(Zhīdào.)
David: Refers to having knowledge of something. For example
Echo: Or heard of something.
David: Or to have heard of something. For example
Echo: 我知道他。(Wǒ zhīdào tā.)
David: I know of him.
Echo: Or I heard of him.
David: Yeah. I’ve heard of him.
Echo: I know his name.
David: Yeah.
Echo: 你知道那件事吗?(Nǐ zhīdào nà jiàn shì ma?)
David: Do you know of that matter. So there is a really important distinction there. There is a third verb which is even more tricky. Echo, what is that?
Echo: 了解。(Liǎojiě.)
David: And that means to deeply and thoroughly understand.
Echo: 更深地知道。(Gēngshēn dì zhīdào.)
David: You really, really understand that person to the core. Let’s get some sample sentences.
Echo: 我知道你认识他,但是你了解他吗?(Wǒ zhīdào nǐ rènshì tā, dànshì nǐ liǎojiě tā ma?)
David: I know you recognize him but do you really, really understand him. That’s a great sentence. Let’s hear that again.
Echo: 我知道你认识他,但是你了解他吗?(Wǒ zhīdào nǐ rènshì tā, dànshì nǐ liǎojiě tā ma?)
David: Perfect. Our second grammar point is about numbers. Now in the dialogue…
Echo: 我最喜欢的。(Wǒ zuì xǐhuān de.)
David: In the dialogue, our police officer gave her telephone number as
Echo: 九一一。(Jiǔ yāo yāo.)
David: Right now…
Echo: 看来这是一个美国警察。(Kàn lái zhè shì yīgè měiguó jǐngchá.)
David: In China, the emergency number is not actually 911.
Echo: 是一一零。(Shì yāo yāo líng.))
David: 110.
Echo: 别打错了。(Bié dǎ cuòle.)
David: Yeah. In general, don’t call but did you notice something interesting there? They didn’t pronounce it
Echo: 一一零。(yāo yāo líng.)
David: Instead it was
Echo: 一一零。(yāo yāo líng.)
David: So that’s a new way of saying one, Echo, what’s going on?
Echo: 因为我们是在一些 (Yīnwèi wǒmen shì zài yīxiē) separate number里边。(Lǐbian.)
David: There are a couple of rules for when we are going to swap out 一 for 一(yao) and the first rule is when we are reading the numbers separately. So it’s not part of a number like 92 or 81 or 71.
Echo: Yeah. And also it’s in a group.
David: Yeah and when we are grouping them together. So we’d say 911.
Echo: 九一一。(Jiǔ yāo yāo.)
David: We can also use it in telephone numbers.
Echo: Such as 一三八。(Yīsānbā.)
David: 138.
Echo: 一一一一,一一一一。(yīyīyīyī, yīyīyīyī.)
David: So Chinese mobile phone numbers, they are 11 digits long and you will get the pattern of 3 and then 4 and then 4.
Echo: Good.

Outro

David: Okay. So that’s our lesson for today. We hope you enjoyed it. Just to review, we learned a lot of useful vocab for talking to the police.
Echo: 警察。(Jǐngchá.)
David: Or maybe the fire department.
Echo: 消防队。(Xiāofáng duì.)
David: We reviewed three really critical verbs for talking about your relationship with people if you recognize them.
Echo: 认识。(Rènshì.)
David: Or you’ve heard of them.
Echo: 知道。(Zhīdào.)
David: Or you deeply understand them.
Echo: 了解。(Liǎojiě.)
David: And then in our grammar section, we also went over numbers and particular one kind of new number that you may not have heard before.
Echo: 九一一。(Jiǔ yāo yāo.)
David: Pay attention to the pronunciation of one there.
Echo: 一。(Yāo.)
David: Perfect. Is there anything we should tell people before they leave?
Echo: 当然啦。(Dāngrán la.)
David: Yeah.
Echo: Leave a comment on the site.
David: Yeah.
Echo: Never forget it.
David: Yeah when you finish listening, come to chineseclass101.com, leave us a comment and if you have any questions, you can leave them too and we will get you your answers. Okay we hope to hear from you. From Beijing, I am David.
Echo: 我是 (Wǒ shì) Echo。
David: And we would like to wish you
Echo: 天天高兴。(Tiāntiān gāoxìng.)
David: Happy studying or we will see you soon. Take care.
