Learn Chinese with ChineseClass101.com! Vacationing in China with your spouse, you are staying in a local Chinese hotel just down the block from a Chinese friend. So while your spouse goes shopping, which you have no interest in, you meet up with your friend at a local coffee shop. Your friend lives at home with his parents while he attends the local Chinese University. He comes into the coffee shop, clearly upset, and sits down with a sigh. You ask him in Chinese, “Is everything okay? What is wrong?” He replies in Chinese, “My parents…they got me my own apartment.” You stare at him in disbelief and ask in Chinese, “So?” You have always heard your friend say he would love to live alone. He explains in Chinese, “It’s not the moving out that makes me mad. As soon as I move out, they want me to marry a girl that I have never met. I know the Chinese culture says that my parents can pick my spouse, but I won’t have it that way. As soon as I finish my degree, I’m leaving.” When trying to comfort him and explaining that his parents won’t disappoint him doesn’t work, you opt for a new approach, offering in Chinese, “I’m sure as soon as you see her it will be love at first sight.” He sighs and replies in Chinese, “I really hope you’re right…”

I don’t really believe in it, but my mom does–she was so shocked when I read her the dialogue, insisted that the speaker was a “bad person.”

More like “infatuation” at first sight. Relationships based only upon appearance are shallow.
