As soon as you see the two massive Western-style buildings, you just know that there's a story behind them. The buildings in question are the eastern and western sections of an old house, and they look just like a church cathedral, or maybe a school, or maybe the sort of house an official would have had in the Republican period. And if this place really was the house of an official, then it makes it the most stylish residence I've seen outside the Forbidden City. The building is even more striking than the Prime Ministerial residences one sees on television dramas. It's just that this place isn't a tourist destination or a museum of any kind. All it is is a dilapidated old house. The whole compound is walled off so the only entrance is through an iron gate that is kept securely locked. It's only by looking through a hole in this broken-down gate that one is able to see the whole face of the house. I discovered that the house was covered with green vines, and covered up so completely you can't see the walls anymore. Filled with curiosity, I read up a lot of materials about this house after returning home. I learned that the house is at 81 Chaonei street, and it is the first of the four great haunted houses in Beijing. According to the most popular legend, the house was once the residence of a high-ranking Kuomingtang official. On fleeing to Taiwan, he cast off his family dependents, leading his concubine to kill herself. From that point on the house was the focus of all kinds of ghost stories which caught people's curiosity and drove many to visit in pursuit of adventure. It's said that most of the people who went exploring never returned. They just disappeared. And so right now, even to people who live right around it, the house feels shrouded in gloom. You can't get too near, and shouldn't talk about it. In truth, this was a church that was built around the year 1900. American missionaries conducted language training in the house, and afterwards it was turned into a Californian college. It was also a language school. The famous Sinologist John Fairbanks studied Chinese there. And then afterwards it became a government organ before being returned to the Catholic Church Association. But because they didn't have the money to repair it, the house has remained empty down to the present day. Ever since discovering this place, I'll stop by it every day when I pass it on the road. I'll take two looks. Sometimes I'll see the guard and ask him to let me in to take a look. But the guard won't allow it because it's steeped in history and is a dangerous structure. And I also feel this is a pity. Fortunately, in these last few days it has snowed heavily in Beijing and the workers have gone in to clean up. So I finally seized the chance to enter the yard an... In the past few years, Beijing has changed a lot. There are a lot more subway lines, housing prices have risen severalfold, the roads are a lot wider and traffic jams keep getting worse and worse. You can see people wearing name-brand clothes everywhere you go, and there are more beggars than before too. My personal impression of this is not too striking. What has really made an impression on me is that the ticket vendors on the public buses have finally been replaced by automated voice machines. And so I no longer find myself sitting on the bus coasting past my stop, just because... I can understand standard mandarin. And my life in Beijing? It's entered its seventh year. I'm a non-Beijinger and won't ever change into one. Two years ago I also read an essay that said that if you really want to enter Beijing life you have to marry into it – business relations won't do. So you can only marry a woman or man from Beijing before you'll really know how Beijingers think and become one of them. But why would I want to do this? Why would I want to live like a Beijinger? Why would I want to change into one of them? The total population in Beijing is around 30 million, and how many of that number are actually homegrown Beijingers? I don't want to become a Beijinger, that's the cry from the bottom of my heart. And can I ask, how many of the people floating around Beijing really want to change into Beijingers anyway? When people from outside the city (me, for instance) speak of Beijingers, we often think of Beijing taxi drivers. I once chatted with several of these guys, and discovered that they live pretty boring lives. They work twelve hours a day and take home no more than two or three thousand RMB per month. And they've still got a wife and kid to raise. Thinking of it, I really pity them. Of course, this isn't to say that everyone in Beijing is this miserable. But in my impression, the lives of Beijingers are like this. Living their whole lives in the hutongs and sharing a public toilet, crammed together for dozens of years until they can finally buy some low-budget housing, if they're lucky. And if their house is torn down, it's hard to say that they'll be given another livable place. But these kinds of people, they're also pretty proud on the inside. Living in the hutongs is “traditional” and buying a low-price apartment is a special privilege afforded to only legal Beijing residents. This is why they all adopt a kind of pitying voice when they ask you, “how long have you been in Beijing?” And then they'll say, “it's hard to make a living here. What a horrible thing it must be to be an outsider here!” And that's when I feel that my empathy for them is perhaps a little over t... After getting everything unpacked and moved in to your new home in China, you decide to tackle that yard. You spend all afternoon planting tons of flowers and even a small garden. And just in time, too - today, you have your five year old niece to watch. You follow her into the backyard as she runs out to play. First, she runs to a patch of flowers and yells back in Chinese, "LOOOK! Bees are on the flowers!" Thinking she has been hurt or something is wrong, you run over to the patch of flowers and stare blankly into the beautiful blooms. Meanwhile, your niece has move on to bigger things - at the gate to the yard, she yells back in Chinese, "OOOOHHH! An inchworm is on your fence!!" Trying desperately to keep up with her, she dashes off to your garden, yelling back in Chinese, "The ladybugs are everywhere!" Realizing at this point that she is not hurt (just excited), you ask in your best Chinese you can muster, "What are you so excited about honey? Please show me." She replies in Chinese, "Ha ha! Don't forget to stop by ChineseClass101.com for more great Chinese Language Learning Resources! ----English---- Love? Bread? People often compare love and bread. And the question, "Which one will you pick?" is just as silly as being forced to choose between a wife and mother trapped in a hypothetically raging river. Why can't you have both? Because this is against human nature. People are always in search of happiness, and there are different levels of happiness. Being able to eat is a sort of happiness. So is having a harmonious family and being accomplished at work. But if you compare these to the pleasures of eating, you'll see they're considered a much higher grade. And why is this? It's because the feeling of achievement at love and work is scarcer. People always conduct themselves lovely. Heaven made our reaches to exceed our grasps. The more we want something, the less we can get it, and the more we can't get something, the more we want it...which makes actually getting something incomparably satisfying. And why can't you have both? The answer is that you can't fish and hunt at the same time, nor eat crab and persimmon at once. We aren't computers with dual-core processors. We also can't multitask. So if we concentrate on one thing, we invariably neglect something else. Of course, this also depends on one's attitude towards career and love life. If you think having a steady job is an accomplishment and consider having an un-divorced spouse a form of marital bliss, then you're a bit like a Pentium-486 and you'll be really happy. But if you want more out of life, then you'll understand. Among our so-called "professional households," it is a sad truth that if the career isn't second-rate then the family relations almost certainly are. Since childhood, we are constantly told to "Struggle all your lives for something." But one never hears anyone tell you to struggle your entire life for love. It might sound a bit immature to mention this. But although love is one of the eternal emotions that binds humanity together, it seems to be only business that gets wrapped up with these sorts of slogans, and only talk of great affairs that pushes us forward. Perhaps this is because love is indifferent to our circumstances and whether we are wealthy or successful in business, whereas great affairs are different. And so no one thinks love is worth mentioning because it can happen to anyone. And as the sayings goes, "For a man to care about women is to have no ambition in life," and "What use will love do in recording your name for posterity?" But life isn't just for keeping our bellies full. Or if it were, then things would be much simpler since there would always be suicide. No...the point of life is to keep on living...
