I thought I'd start a new thread about news about China.
This article pertains to new cars in Beijing. It states that
1,200 new cars hit the streets of Beijing every day.

Actually I see tons and tons of Buicks in China - odd but true.

I suppose that they don't qualify for the "cash for clunkers"
program in China?　:-) Hey, I'm glad to see them buying
American, but I'd only buy Japanese cars. I haven't had any
problems with Hondas and Toyotas. Great cars. My Buick nickle and dimed me to death.

My favorites are still the old Czech-built trucks they use in construction. Absolutely massive and also incredibly polluting. I actually think they're banned from traveling on the ring roads during the day because of that, although you can still catch buzzing around in the evenings.

Cool reminder of the days when industrial development implied making huge machines. Wouldn't surprise me if some of them are 30-40 years old. Just seeing them brings out the boy in me.

From the rhetoric, and tone coming from the government when extolling the successes of the Chinese auto manufacturing sector, there seems to be an implicit guarantee that everyone in China will be able to own their own car in the near future. I'm not sure what the end game is, but I'm pretty sure having 1 billion cars is unsustainable, and also unattainable. I think China should be investing heavily into "Star Trek Beaming" technology. It is the only way.

Also, gas stations seem few and far between here in the city, and when I see one, they are deserted, yet the roadways are always jammed. Where and when do people get their gasoline????
