Everyone has felt this pain and knows how badly it hurts to lose a pet…an animal whose love knows no boundaries! They are always there for you, day in and day out, regardless of what you say or do to them! But why does my friend from China feel so responsible for the death of her beloved Chanel? This fragile passing of life isn’t even something that happened recently. It is only now that she has been able to talk about it. It happens every now and then and as I look around, I wonder to myself if you are there, or maybe you are thinking of me too. It has been a long time since we wandered the streets of China together! We were so happy at times…angry…sad at others! Sometimes, while sitting quietly in my desk at the big Chinese university I attend, or while hammering away at reports for my very demanding Chinese boss, my mind drifts away to a quieter, calmer time and I can’t help but wonder…do you still think about me too?

Learn Chinese with ChineseClass101.com! Today, I met with my new friend from the Chinese university…only, today she strangely smelled of cigarette smoke. I have never seen her smoke a cigarette, but I know that smell well! It reminds me of another time in my life…. Through the not-so-distant smoldering ashes of my past, my Chinese father holds me tight as I breathe in the rugged, manly smell that has always made me feel safe. My Chinese grandfather sits in an over-stuffed armchair even before the early bird has risen. The light dancing through the smoke and dust in the room, creating a halo around his gentle head. My brother and husband stand outside a Chinese hospital room, panic-stricken and yet relieved and overjoyed to know they are now not just brother and husband, but Uncle and Dad. It’s amazing how a smell can mean so many different things to different people!

I don’t want the pressure of answering questions about why I am down, agreeing with everyone about how much I have to be thankful for, and being told to “look on the bright side.” Sometimes, the only one you want to answer to is you. I feel that way often, and today was one of those days. I wonder sometimes as I sit alone and watch others in China rush by, if I am the only one…or are there others like me…others that sit in lonely Chinese cafes, sipping coffee-for-one while others nearby sit elbow to elbow chatting obnoxiously as if to taunt me. Oddly, sometimes, it makes me feel better to eavesdrop on these Chinese conversations…as if their joy is transferred to me through the common bond we share called humanity.

Our professor had us do an interesting experiment to open our minds and enable us to think more creatively when we write. She asked us in her sweet Chinese voice to close our eyes and imagine a time when we were children attending school. She told us to imagine everything around us in China- the colors, the smells, the sounds, the people. As I sat there in that hard wooden school chair, I was transported to a more innocent time for me in China, a time when pigtails and squeals of laughter surrounded me! In moments, I could see my tiny red schoolhouse in China, my friends running through the streets, and my mother screaming after me to get to school!
