Learn Chinese with ChineseClass101.com! As we mentioned earlier, choice is a great thing to have. Too many choices can be irritating though. So when the taxi driver starts consulting you on which route to take, the obvious answer is “the fastest route.” As long as you’re speaking mandarin and sound confident in your knowledge of the city, it is highly unlikely that you will be cheated. So give him the power to set the route and sit back and plug yourself into another Chinese lesson. He’s the pro and you aren’t after all. This power of delegation also works in a variety of other scenarios. At the restaurant, the waitress may give you ten different options on how you want your chicken cooked. The obvious answer is “whichever way is the tastiest!” As long as you get to where you are going, and as long as the food meets your needs, the other details are inconsequential.

When this happens, you’re going to need more than the knowledge of how to get to your destination though. You’ll also need to know how to tell someone else how to get there. Which is where this lesson comes in, lovely isn’t it?

Learn Chinese with ChineseClass101.com! Why does it always work out this way? It has to be the exact day you’re running late for an appointment that you forget exactly how to get to the inner reaches of Beijing’s hutongs. And as luck would have it, you’ve also managed to get a taxi driver from out of town who is still struggling to figure out which way is north. But don’t worry! You filled up your SIM card with credits recently and have a friend who is already at the engagement. Why not just ring them up and have them give directions to the driver? Crisis averted, and you’ll even get to the party fashionably late.

Learn Chinese with ChineseClass101.com. You and three friends are running around the city enjoying seeing all of the Chinese sights. It seems that every time you hop into a Chinese taxicab, you get stuck in the front seat with the Chinese cab driver. And every time you are in the front, you have to give directions to the driver. You feel that you are doing the Chinese taxi driver’s job, but you do not want to ruin the day by complaining, so you are giving the best directions you can. At one point, you even had to tell the driver in Chinese, “Wait, turn right!” He passed the right turn, said something inaudible, and turned around, which confused you. It took over another half an hour to get to the place you wanted to arrive at. When you finally arrived at your destination, your friends shout in Chinese, “Yeah, that’s the right spot!” While your friends are happy to arrive, your Chinese taxi driver is happy to leave!
