----English----

My primary school was a long way from my home. Every day it would take me half an hour to get there. I forget which year it was, but the school once put up a bike yard, and said students could apply to ride a bicycle to school. I was delighted when I heard this. For someone like me who spent my youth \"chasing the wind\", speed was like life itself. A bicycle was like an extension of a person\'s body, and someone could feel crippled without one. The only problem was that... my house didn\'t have a bike and I didn\'t know how to ride.

So I returned home and started bawling and rolling around the floor crying for my mother buy me a bicycle. I was totally shameless about this, because mother was incredibly frugal. If you gave her a hectare of land, she\'d be able to grow a Wal-Mart. And no-one could get the better of her on money issues. After a week of this behavior my mother finally said, \"if you learn to ride a bike I\'ll buy you one!\" And so I struggled to learn how to ride a bicycle with the kid of one of my neighbors. But learning to ride wasn\'t much of a struggle for, as I\'ve already told you, I\'m was born to fly like the wind, with a real feel for speed.

When I went to get my prize from my mother, she suddenly made an about-face and said, \"we\'ll buy it when we have the money!\" And so I started to cry and roll around on the floor again. My mother couldn\'t take this, and so managed to rustle up a broken-down second-hand bike, which I immediately refused to accept. Now that I think of it, that bike wasn\'t that broken-down, but to my eager, dreaming eyes nothing but a bicycle with gears and multiple speeds would do. And so I started crying again and rolling around on the floor, screaming, \"I want a new bike! I want a bike with gears!\" And of course, what I wanted was the popular bike model of that year, which was the type of bike that would change gears just like a Transformers vehicle when you squeezed the handle. Mother was only able to compromise, but she demanded that I wash the dishes for two months in exchange for the new bike. And because I wasn\'t economically independent and wasn\'t too obstinate, I could only accept this humiliating condition. But looking back on her previous lies, I insisted on getting the bike before selling myself into servitude in the kitchen. And so a brand new purple bike soon bedazzled the front of my house. And at the same time, I started my new two month career as a dishwasher.

Afterward, my parents took this as a case study of their way of raising me. \"You can\'t give children what they want so easily. They have to know that there\'s no such thing as a free lunch,\" and so on and so forth. But this wasn\'t the lesson that I\'d learned. I\'d learned only two things. First, that my mother was a giant cheat. And second, when I grew up I wanted to make a lot of cash, so I could buy whatever I wanted.

Later on, I was washing dishes at home one when my cousin came looking for me to play. As soon as she arrived, she rushed over to tell me a big piece of gossip. \"Goodness gracious, I was just coming over when I heard someone at the front of your street say there\'s some kid down here who\'s got to wash dishes for two months in exchange for a bike....\"

This was the town where I grew up. No-one had any secrets.
