INTRODUCTION
Frank: Hey, everyone.
Echo: Da jia hao!
Frank: Welcome back to ChineseClass101.com, Season 1, Lesson 19 in our Beginner series. I’m your host, Frank Fradella, and I’m joined in the studio today by the exceptional Echo.
Echo: 谢谢(Xièxiè),我是(Wǒ shì)Echo.
Frank: Today’s dialogue features two folks to tail end of a date. It’s our old friends…
Echo: Zhang Fei with Ma Li.
Frank: They might be at a bar or a night club…
Echo: Yeah.
Frank: …and they are speaking casually to one another.
Echo: Sure.
Frank: Let’s get on to the dialogue now.
Echo: But before we do…
Frank: But before we do, if you haven’t sign up for your free lifetime account yet, it’s high time indeed.
Echo: Right.
Frank: It just takes a few seconds up at ChineseClass101.com. We’ll see you there. For now though, we’re on to the dialogue.

Lesson conversation

张飞:美女,你真漂亮。(ZHĀNG FĒI: Měinǚ, nǐ zhēn piàoliang.)
马丽:真的吗?(MǍ LÌ: Zhēn de ma?)
张飞:真的,非常漂亮。(ZHĀNG FĒI: Zhēn de, fēicháng piàoliang.)
马丽:你喝多了。(MǍ LÌ: Nǐ hē duō le.)
Frank: Now one more time, just a little slower.
张飞:美女,你真漂亮。(ZHĀNG FĒI: Měinǚ, nǐ zhēn piàoliang.)
马丽:真的吗?(MǍ LÌ: Zhēn de ma?)
张飞:真的,非常漂亮。(ZHĀNG FĒI: Zhēn de, fēicháng piàoliang.)
马丽:你喝多了。(MǍ LÌ: Nǐ hē duō le.)
Frank: Okay, we’re back. It looks like our boy can’t hold his liquor.
Echo: That’s nice.
Frank: Yeah. I wonder how many tricks he actually had. Is there a famous Chinese drink you should know about here?
Echo: With beauty.
Frank: I know.
Echo: Right?
Frank: I know. I’d be nervous too. I’d be drinking as well. Let’s go ahead and do this line-by-line.
张飞:美女,你真漂亮。(ZHĀNG FĒI: Měinǚ, nǐ zhēn piàoliang.)
Frank: Pretty girl, you're very pretty.
马丽:真的吗?(MǍ LÌ: Zhēn de ma?)
Frank: Really?
张飞:真的,非常漂亮。(ZHĀNG FĒI: Zhēn de, fēicháng piàoliang.)
Frank: Really. Extremely beautiful.
马丽:你喝多了。(MǍ LÌ: Nǐ hē duō le.)
Frank: You are drunk.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Frank: I don’t know if he’s making his best showing here.
Echo: He’s just a drunker.
Frank: Maybe he was just nervous, had a few too many over dinner.
Echo: I just don’t like him at all.
Frank: I can tell. We’re going to give another chance, though.
Echo: He can’t even remember the girl’s name, huh?
Frank: Yeah. But I mean, maybe he was just trying to be complimentary.
Echo: He’s going too far.
Frank: I really think that he was just complementing her. As a matter of fact, that’s what we are going to cover in our vocab today; words for pretty and beautiful…
Echo: Yes.
Frank: …and the opposite.
VOCAB LIST
Male: Now, the vocab section.
Echo: 美女(měinǚ) [natural native speed].

Frank: Really.
Echo: 真(zhēn) [slowly - broken down by syllable]. 真(zhēn) [natural native speed].
Echo: 美(měi) [natural native speed].

Echo: 非常(fēicháng) [natural native speed].
Frank: Extremely.
Echo: 非常(fēicháng) [slowly - broken down by syllable]. 非常(fēicháng) [natural native speed].

Echo: 多。(Duō.)
KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Echo: Okay.
Frank: Okay, we’re back. Now today, we’re going to actually learn a whole bunch of words for pretty and beautiful and attractive.
Echo: Yeah. I love this lesson.
Frank: Well, you should. You’re being so pretty at all.
Echo: Oh. 谢谢你. 太谢谢了。(Xièxiè nǐ. Tài xièxièle.)
Frank: First word we’re going to talk about today, we heard this in the dialogue, let’s hear it, Echo.
Echo: 漂亮(Piàoliang) [natural native speed].
Frank: This means “beautiful”.
Echo: The most common word to describe. Beautiful. 漂亮.(Piàoliang.)
Frank: The next word we wanted to teach you was this:
Echo: 好看。(hǎokàn.)
Frank: You’ve actually heard both of these separately before.
Echo: Yeah. 好看(hǎokàn) is more casual.
Frank: Right. It means “good looking”. The first part of that…
Echo: 好。(Hǎo)
Frank: Meaning “good”. You’ve heard this before. The second one 看(Kàn)
Echo: 好看(hǎokàn) [natural native speed].
Frank: “To look or to see”. Good-looking.
Echo: 好看(hǎokàn) [natural native speed].
Frank: Easy way to remember that. Our next word…
Echo: 美。(měi.)
Frank: Also means “beautiful”. You heard it in the dialogue like this:
Echo: 美女。(měinǚ.)
Frank: Beautiful girl or pretty girl.
Echo: Yeah. Right.
Frank: Now just like in America, you wouldn’t refer to a boy as pretty.
Echo: Right.
Frank: You’d call him handsome. So what’s the adjective for “handsome”?
Echo: 帥(shuài) [natural native speed].
Frank: So a handsome guy is…
Echo: Like Frank, 帥哥(shuàigē) [natural native speed].
Frank: You’re too good to me, Echo. Now, of course, not everybody is as good-looking as you and I. So somebody who’s not good-looking….
Echo: 不好看.(Bù hǎokàn.)
Frank: Not good looking. Not good to look at. Also, you could say that they’re not beautiful.
Echo: 不漂亮。(Bù piàoliang.)
Frank: Our last word, this one’s interesting.
Echo: It’s a bit strong.
Frank: Yeah, it’s a bit strong. Let’s hear.
Echo: . 难看。(nánkàn.)It’s hard to look.
Frank: It’s literally hard to look at. So if it’s so ugly, they’re hard to look at. It’s just harsh. Let’s hear some sample sentences. “She is very pretty.”
Echo: 她很漂亮。(Tā hěn piàoliang.)
Frank: Her sister isn’t good-looking.
Echo: 她妹妹不好看。(Tā mèimei bù hǎokàn.)
Frank: He is really handsome.
Echo: 他真帅。(Tā zhēn shuài.)
Frank: My mom is extremely beautiful.
Echo: 我妈妈非常美。(Wǒ māmā fēicháng měi.)
Frank: And she is too.
Echo: Thank you.
Frank: Let’s go ahead and move on to the grammar.

Lesson focus

Male: It’s grammar time!
Frank: By now, you’re an old hem at the sentence patterns we’ve taught you involving sentences with adjectives using the adverb…
Echo: 很(hěn)
Frank: For example, “they are busy”.
Echo: 他们很忙。(Tāmen hěn máng.)
Frank: We are hungry.
Echo: 我们很饿。(Wǒmen hěn è.)
Frank: Today, we learn two more adjectives that can take the place of…
Echo: 很(Hěn)
Frank: …in these sentences. Let’s take up for a spin. The first one is…
Echo: 真(Zhēn)
Frank: I means “really” or “truthfully”. For example, “That kid is really cute.”
Echo: 那个孩子真可爱。(Nàgè háizi zhēn kě'ài.)
Frank: This tea is really good.
Echo: 这个茶真好。(Zhège chá zhēn hǎo.)
Frank: That kid is really cute.
Echo: 那孩子真可爱。(Nà háizi zhēn kě'ài.)
Frank: This tea is really good.
Echo: 这茶真好。(Zhè chá zhēn hǎo.)
Frank: Your girlfriend is really pretty.
Echo: 你的女朋友真漂亮。(Nǐ de nǚ péngyǒu zhēn piàoliang.)
Frank: The other adverb we learned today is…
Echo: 非常。(fēicháng)
Frank: It means “extremely”, as in “we are extremely thirsty.”
Echo: 我们非常渴。(Wǒmen fēicháng kě.)
Frank: He is extremely ugly.
Echo: 他非常难看。(Tā fēicháng nánkàn.)
Frank: My friend is extremely beautiful.
Echo: 我的朋友非常美。(Wǒ de péngyǒu fēicháng měi.)
Frank: As always, you can say the sentence in the negative by replacing the adverb with….
Echo: 不(Bù)
Frank: For example, “We’re not hungry”
Echo: 我们不饿。(Wǒmen bù è.)
Frank: Chinese is not difficult.
Echo: 中文不难。(Zhōngwén bù nán.)
Frank: Now if you mean something really negative, you can also put…
Echo: 不(Bù)
Frank: …after the adverb but before the adjective. It enhances litigation. Let’s hear it. Very not good.
Echo: 很不好。(Hěn bù hǎo.)
Frank: Really not good.
Echo: 真不好。(Zhēn bù hǎo.)
Frank: Extremely not good-looking.
Echo: 非常不好看。(Fēicháng bù hǎokàn.)that is 非常难看。(Fēicháng nánkàn.)
Frank: That’s right. Actually, I feel like of bad for that guy.
Echo: Poor guy.
Frank: Yes. But we’ve got some good-looking listeners and we want to see all of you up at ChineseClass101.com. Hey listen, download those transcripts. You can follow along with Echo and I during the lesson and it actually has the tone marks of [*] so you can get those tones right.
Echo: Right. Can’t be easier.
Frank: Can’t be easier than that. We’ll see you next time. From Beijing, I’m Frank Fradella.
Echo: 我是(Wǒ shì) Echo.
Frank: …and we’ll see you next time. 再见。(Zàijiàn.)
Echo: 下次见。(Xià cì jiàn.)
