INTRODUCTION
Frank: Hi, everyone!
Echo: 大家好。(Dàjiā hǎo.)
Frank: Welcome back to ChineseClass101.com, Season 1, Lesson 16 in our Beginner Series.
Echo: Yes.
Frank: Today’s lesson is about computers.
Echo: Right.
Frank: One of my favorite things, I won’t mind all day long.
Echo: It’s your favorite part.
Frank: It is actually. Today’s dialogue is between a store employee and a customer. They’re in a computer store…
Echo: …and they’re speaking casually.
Frank: That’s absolutely right. Let’s go ahead and listen to the dialogue now.
Echo: But before we do, don’t forget…
Frank: Before we do, we don’t care if you’re a Mac or a PC user because we love you just the same.
Echo: Yeah.
Frank: You could use that computer to head up to ChineseClass101.com…
Echo: …and comment.
Frank: Leave us a comment. We’d love to hear it from you. Let’s go ahead and listen to the dialogue now.
Echo: Okay. Let’s go.

Lesson conversation

服务员:你想要什么?(FÚWÙYUÁN: Nǐ xiǎng yào shénme?)
张飞:这儿有苹果电脑吗?(ZHĀNG FĒI: Zhèr yǒu Píngguǒ diànnǎo ma?)
服务员:有。(FÚWÙYUÁN: Yǒu.)
张飞:我可以看一看吗?(ZHĀNG FĒI: Wǒ kěyǐ kànyīkàn ma?)
服务员:可以。(FÚWÙYUÁN: Kěyǐ.)
Frank: Now one more time, a little slower.
服务员:你想要什么?(FÚWÙYUÁN: Nǐ xiǎng yào shénme?)
张飞:这儿有苹果电脑吗?(ZHĀNG FĒI: Zhèr yǒu Píngguǒ diànnǎo ma?)
服务员:有。(FÚWÙYUÁN: Yǒu.)
张飞:我可以看一看吗?(ZHĀNG FĒI: Wǒ kěyǐ kànyīkàn ma?)
服务员:可以。(FÚWÙYUÁN: Kěyǐ.)
Frank: Okay. We’re back! Echo, are you a PC user or an Apple user?
Echo: PC.
Frank: I’m a Mac user. Yet, we still get along.
Echo: Yeah. Sure.
Frank: Let’s just see what we couldn’t get along. Come on, we’re bridging that gap.
Echo: We’re good friends.
Frank: I know. I love it. That’s why I can go through the dialogue line by line.
Echo: Okay.
服务员:你想要什么?(FÚWÙYUÁN: Nǐ xiǎng yào shénme?)
Frank: What do you want?
张飞:这儿有苹果电脑吗?(ZHĀNG FĒI: Zhèr yǒu Píngguǒ diànnǎo ma?)
Frank: Do you have Apple computers here?
服务员:有。(FÚWÙYUÁN: Yǒu.)
Frank: We have.
张飞:我可以看一看吗?(ZHĀNG FĒI: Wǒ kěyǐ kànyīkàn ma?)
Frank: Can I have a look?
服务员:可以。(FÚWÙYUÁN: Kěyǐ.)
Frank: Yes, you can.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Echo: 您想要什么?(Nín xiǎng yào shénme?)
Frank: Before we go on, I did want to point out that we translated that phrases “what do you want”, which in English, is a very rude thing. If you walk into a store and someone says, “What do you want?” it’s like of rude. “What do you want?”
Echo: Yeah. But it’s quite…
Frank: But here, it’s simply a way of their saying, “How can I help you?”
Echo: Right.
Frank: It’s like, “What are you looking for?”
Echo: It’s quite natural in Chinese.
Frank: Very, very natural in Chinese.
Echo: 您想要什么?(Nín xiǎng yào shénme?)
Frank: Exactly. Get used to hearing that. Let’s get on to the vocab now.
VOCAB LIST
Male: Now, the vocab section.
Echo: 苹果(píngguǒ) [natural native speed].
Frank: Apple.
Echo: 苹果(píngguǒ) [slowly - broken down by syllable]. 苹果(píngguǒ) [natural native speed].
Echo: 电脑(diànnǎo) [natural native speed].
Frank: Computer.
Echo: 电脑(diànnǎo) [slowly - broken down by syllable]. 电脑(diànnǎo) [natural native speed].
Echo: 可以(kěyǐ) [natural native speed].
Frank: Can.
Echo: 可以(kěyǐ) [slowly - broken down by syllable]. 可以(kěyǐ) [natural native speed].
Echo: 看一看(kànyīkàn) [natural native speed].
Frank: To have a look.
Echo: 看一看(kànyīkàn) [slowly - broken down by syllable]. 看一看(kànyīkàn) [natural native speed].
KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Frank: Okay, Echo. We’re back! Here’s another thing. Just like it is in English, the word for “apple”….
Echo: 蘋果(píngguǒ)
Frank: …does not just relate to the computer itself.
Echo: Right.
Frank: This is actually the name of the fruit.
Echo: It’s a kind of fruit. Yeah.
Frank: Exactly.
Echo: It’s my favorite fruit.
Frank: Is that right?
Echo: Right!
Frank: Let’s hear it one more time then.
Echo: 蘋果(píngguǒ)
Frank: Great. The word for “computer”?
Echo: 電腦(diànnǎo)
Frank: So an Apple computer is…
Echo: 苹果电脑。(Píngguǒ diànnǎo.)
Frank: Let’s hear those in sample sentences. “Do you have Apple computers?”
Echo: 有没有苹果电脑?(Yǒu méiyǒu píngguǒ diànnǎo?)
Frank: Do you like apple computers?
Echo: 你喜欢电脑吗?(Nǐ xǐhuān diànnǎo ma?)
Frank: She has a laptop.
Echo: 她有一个笔记本。(Tā yǒu yīgè bǐjìběn.)
Frank: We treat a new word on that one last one just because we like it. The next vocab words that we wanted to cover was the word that you heard for “can”.
Echo: 可以。(kěyǐ.)
Frank: Interesting thing about this word is that it implies a permission to being asked or given.
Echo: Right.
Frank: Let’s hear some sample sentences of that. “Can we go now?”
Echo: 我们现在可以去吗?(Wǒmen xiànzài kěyǐ qù ma?)
Frank: Can I pay the bill now?
Echo: 我现在可以买单吗?(Wǒ xiànzài kěyǐ mǎidān ma?)
Frank: Can you give me that?
Echo: 你可以给我那个吗?(Nǐ kěyǐ gěi wǒ nàgè ma?)
Frank: Of course, the answer to all of these questions is either…
Echo: 可以。(Kěyǐ.)
Frank: Which means “can” or…
Echo: 不可以。(Bù kěyǐ.)
Frank: Which means you can’t.
Echo: Right.
Frank: That’s it! Echo, can we go to grammar now?
Echo: 可以.(Kěyǐ.) Of course! 可以.(Kěyǐ.)
Frank: Your favorite part. Let’s go and do it.

Lesson focus

Male: It’s grammar time!
Frank: In previous lesson, we learn the verb “to look”.
Echo: 看.(Kàn.)
Frank: For example, “Look at this”.
Echo: 看这个。(Kàn zhège.)
Frank: I can’t see it.
Echo: 我看不见。(Wǒ kàn bùjiàn.)
Frank: She can’t read Chinese.
Echo: 她看不懂中文。(Tā kàn bù dǒng zhōngwén.)
Frank: In this lesson, you’re hearing and you choose the verb again except we’ve got two of them side by side…
Echo: Right.
Frank: …with the number one in the middle of them.
Male: 我可以看一看吗?(Wǒ kěyǐ kànyīkàn ma?)
Echo: 看一看?(Kàn yī kàn?)
Frank: But that doesn’t mean to look at the number one in between the two of them. It’s not what we’re saying there.
Echo: Yeah.
Frank: What it actually mean is, “to have a little luck.”
Echo: Right.
Frank: It’s to do something a little bit. You can use this with other verbs as well.
Echo: Right.
Frank: Let’s hear some examples of that.
Echo: Let’s go.
Frank: “Can I have a look at your computer?”
Echo: 我可以看一看你的电脑吗?(Wǒ kěyǐ kàn yī kàn nǐ de diànnǎo ma?)
Frank: Can you wait for me a little while?
Echo: 你可以等一等我吗?(Nǐ kěyǐ děng yī děng wǒ ma?)
Frank: Can we take a little walk?
Echo: 我们可以走一走吗?(Wǒmen kěyǐ zǒu yī zǒu ma?)
Frank: You should also be aware that sometimes you’ll hear people drop the number one out of the middle of this.
Echo: Right.
Frank: But it means exactly the same thing.
Echo: Same thing. Right.
Frank: Right. Right. This is actually, if you’re browsing a textbook, you’ll see this for two’s, verb for duplication.
Echo: Exactly.
Frank: It’s a big word for very small thing. Let’s go ahead and hear those sentences one more time without the number one. “Can I have a look at your computer?”
Echo: 我可以看看你的电脑吗?(Wǒ kěyǐ kàn kàn nǐ de diànnǎo ma?)
Frank: Can you wait for me a little while?
Echo: 你可以等等我吗?(Nǐ kěyǐ děng děng wǒ ma?)
Frank: Can we take a little walk?
Echo: 我们可以走走吗?(Wǒmen kěyǐ zǒu zǒu ma?)
Frank: This is also a really polite way of telling someone to do something.
Echo: Right.
Frank: For example, “Have a look”.
Echo: 看一看。(kànyīkàn.)
Frank: Wait a while.
Echo: 等一等。(děngyīděng.)
Frank: Have a listen.
Echo: 听一听。(Tīng yī tīng.)
Frank: We’d like you to have a listen to your own voice up at ChineseClass101.com. Use the voice recording tool. Listen to your own voice. Compare it to native Mandarin speakers and really get the hang of this stuff.
Echo: 听一听你的声音。(Tīng yī tīng nǐ de shēngyīn.)
Frank: There you go. But for now, from Beijing, I’m Frank Fradella.
Echo: 我是(Wǒ shì)Echo
Frank: We’ll see you next time. 再见。(Zàijiàn.)
Echo: 下次见。(Xià cì jiàn.)
