help me pronounce "i"...

Postby gary » June 16th, 2009 8:50 pm

Hi,

In the sentence "meishi, bu keqi" from season 1 lesson 3 of the beginner series, "meishi" sounds like "mei-shar", but the "i" in "bu keqi" sounds like "ee". I think most of the time "i" sounds like "ee", but once in a while it seems like it doesn't, so I'm a little confused.

Also, I am KimchiAndSoju from KoreanClass101.com, I decided to use my real name here.

Hi Gary씨

I'm maxiewawa from KClass.

You're right that 'i' represents different sounds in Chinese; unfortunately that's just the way that Chinese is.

But rest assured that every time you see 'shi' it's pronounced that way. And every time you see 'qi' as a syllable, it's pronounced the way you noticed, like an 'ee'. Or perhaps, an 이, since you're familiar with Hangeul.
