Telling time

Postby jctalker1 » October 31st, 2009 5:02 pm

How to tell time in Chinese is a good one... Right now I'm having the hardest time finding this topic... (how do you say "afternoon" in Chinese? As as in "good afternoon"... Also to help others learn, simply teach them how to say: "how do you say "__" in Chinese?" For example in Spanish it's Como se dice? as in Como se dice "dog" en Español? To which one comprehending English would reply "perro"...

There's a lesson that covers "how do you say....". The link is below.

http://www.chineseclass101.com/2009/04/ ... m-phrases/

"Afternoon" in Chinese is 下午。"Good afternoon" would be "下午好" xia4 wu3 hao3.
"Good morning" would be “早上好" zao3 shang3 hao3。1pm would be 下午一点。9am is 早上九点。

That really helps though I've got to figure out how the Hanzi is read now. Thanks a lot! lol

Anyway, I think I'm gonna be using "Zhōngwén zěnme shuō ?" for quite a while... I think my pal Vincent over at the all you can eat Chinese Buffet can help with that...

Reading the Hanzi is simply a matter of practice. As you recognize more characters, they start to snowball as you encounter new words. I use flashcardexchange.com to build up vocabulary from the Survival Phrases and Elementary lessons and have seen characters come up in other contexts and build upon that learning.

CC101 has a sister site, popupchinese.com There's a
wonderful tool called "Adsotrans" which allows you to enter text and get a rough translation. The dictionary there is excellent.

shanshanchua gave you a good pointer on the "how do you say --- in Chinese". I found that lesson very helpful.
