Pinyin in pdfs

Postby bendyarm » May 19th, 2009 6:44 pm

Hello,

The pinyin in the pdfs does not show up well for me. There is too much space around the tone-marked letters, or sometimes they overlap with an adjacent letter.

I am using Acrobat Reader 8.1.4 (currently the most recent) on Windows XP. When I first opened a pdf it downloaded Chinese fonts. The hanzi look OK.

Do I need to download a special pinyin font or something?

Thanks,
Bendyarm

Pinyin for example sentence

Postby sgerchick » May 22nd, 2009 12:41 pm

for me, pinyin looks fine..however, i seem to have pinyin for only 10% of the sample sentences section of each pdf....pinyin are fine elsewhere and also fine, when displayed in the sentences section

Pinyin also shows up ugly for me. It overlaps on the letters with the intonation markers...

Everyone, thank you for your feedback.

Please be sure to check out both of our PDFs the Lesson Notes, and the Lesson Notes Lite versions. Each one uses a different font.

Specific differences are:

Lesson Notes
-fully accessible to screen reading software
-supports bookmarks and other advanced PDF options (as we implement them)
-supports copying content from the PDF to paste into your favorite study tools
-requires Adobe's font pack and Adobe reader 7,8, or 9
-not compatible with Mac's Preview (but may be compatible in the future)

Lesson Notes Lite
-partially embedded font, no outside fonts required
-different font type so may display differently (nicer) on some systems
-compatible with all PDF readers except those needing accessibility options
-not accessible to screen reading software
-does not support bookmarks and some other advanced PDF options
-does not support copying content from the PDF

Thank you
Charles

I don't think you are listening.
The Pinyin looks nasty to me too both with Firefox and IE. Overlapping letters et al ...

Hello Mike,

Please, let me try again.

Which PDF are you viewing?

As for the browser, it should make no difference on the way the font appears.

Thank you,
Charles

Mike,
Thank you for specifying the lesson. You said that you were looking at the "Lesson Notes", have you also tried looking at the "Lesson Notes Lite" PDF?

Some users claim that the Lesson Notes Lite PDF (which is the link right below "Lesson Notes") looks better for them because it uses a different font.

Hello, I also wanted to say in all the "Lesson Notes", pinyin is not really readable, characters overlap, but this is the lesson note I want to use, since from the Lesson Note Lite which is indead readable it is not possible to take out sentences to my vocabulary and sentence database, as I whish to do sometimes. Couldn't you use an other font for the pinyin which would get better results for us users? The problem arises because Acrobate Reader chooses a wrong font to show Pinyin, but I as user cannot change that font...

I run windows vista.
When I upgraded to adobe reader 9.xx after I opened the lesson notes (not lite lesson notes) a couple of times all the fonts were downloaded automatically. The pinyin was still missing in half the pdf.

I completely uninstalled adobe reader 9.xx and reinstalled 8.xx. Once I opened the lesson notes the simplified Chinese fonts were automatically installed but half the pdf was blank.
I found the manual download of the traditional fonts at adobe site and once I manually installed the fonts all the lesson notes looked good including all the pinyin.

mileage may vary

On a Mac using Adobe Reader 8.1.6, the pinyin on the Lesson Notes (Elementary lesson #4 - Getting the Digits) is not really legible, overlapping letters, tone marks, etc. For the Lesson Notes Lite the pinyin looks good.

cwabbott - I suggest that you find a solution to this since this is not an isolated problem. It is not acceptable to only have the lite version appear correctly.
