Lesson Transcript

Hi! Welcome to Chinese Top Words. My name is Rui. Today, we are going to talk about 10 must-know words to party in China.
1. 聚会 (jùhuì) "reunion"
下周六是我们的十周年同学聚会。 (Xià zhōu liù shì wǒmen de shí zhōunián tóngxué jùhuì.) "Next Saturday is our 10 year class reunion."
聚会 (Jùhuì) can refer to the reunion with your family or with your classmates or with your friends. So for “family reunion”, 家庭聚会 (jiātíng jùhuì); for friends’ reunion, 朋友聚会 (péngyǒu jùhuì); for classmates reunion 同学聚会 (tóngxué jùhuì).
2. 联欢会 (lián huān huì) "party"
听说明天公司举办的联欢会在公园里举行。 (Tīngshuō míngtiān gōngsī jǔbàn de liánhuānhuì zài gōngyuánli jǔxíng.) "I heard that the company will hold the party in the park tomorrow."
So 联欢会 (lián huān huì) means "party", but recently, the young people do not use this word. They just use party so they don’t really use 联欢会 (lián huān huì), but if you use 联欢会 (lián huān huì), we still understand it.
3. 派对 (pài duì) "party"
小丽正忙着准备生日派对的客人名单。 (Xiǎo Lì zhèng mángzhe zhǔnbèi shēngrì pàiduì de kèrén míngdān.) "Xiao Li is busy preparing the guest list for her birthday party."
So 联欢会 (lián huān huì) is a formal term for “party”, but 派对 (pài duì) is more casual term for “party”. They both refer to party, but the nuance is a little different.
4. 庆祝 (qìng zhù) "celebrate"
我买了礼物庆祝好友喜得贵子。 (Wǒ mǎi le lǐwù qìngzhù hǎoyou xǐ de guìzǐ.) "I bought a gift to celebrate my best friend having a new baby."
喜得贵子 (Xǐ de guìzǐ) is a Chinese proverb. It means somebody happily have a new baby.
5. 喜庆的 (xǐqìng de) "happy"
今天是个喜庆的日子,我们搬入了新居。 (Jīntiān shìgè xǐqìng de rìzi, wǒmen bānrùle xīnjū.) "Today is a happy day; we moved into a new house."
So what makes you happy? Okay, what makes me happy? So the sense of achievement represented by money makes me happy. Money and my boyfriend makes me very happy.
6. 欢聚一堂 (huān jù yì táng) "Have a joyous gathering"
老朋友们欢聚一堂,共度美好时光。 (Lǎopéngyǒumen huānjùyìtáng, gòngdù měihǎo shíguāng.) "Old friends gathered together and had a good time."
欢聚一堂 (Huān jù yì táng) is a Chinese proverb. It means a lot of people gather together, happily spend time together, 欢聚一堂 (huān jù yì táng). 欢 (Huān) means “joyfully”, 聚 (jù) means “gather together”.
7. 独唱 (dú chàng) "solo"
一位著名歌唱家在晚会上表演了独唱。 (Yíwèi zhùmíng gēchàngjiā zài wǎnhuì shàng biǎoyǎnle dúchàng.) "A famous singer performed solos at the party."
8. 舞蹈 (wǔ dǎo) "dance"
杨丽萍的舞蹈非常优美。 (Yáng Lìpíng de wǔdǎo fēicháng yōuměi.) "Yang Liping's dance is very graceful."
So Yang Liping is a very famous dancer in China. Her most famous dance is she acted like a peacock and it’s so graceful and it was so charming. You can be totally immersed in her dance. Like for a second, you could actually believe she is a peacock, yeah. You can check it on YouTube, Yang Liping.
9. 游戏 (yóu xì) "game"
昨天晚会上的游戏很有趣,大家玩得很开心。 (Zuótiān wǎnhuì shàng de yóuxì hěn yǒuqù, dàjiā wánde hěn kāixīn.) "The games at the party yesterday were very interesting. We had a lot of fun."
10. 干杯 (Gān bēi!) "Cheers!"
