INTRODUCTION
David: Hi and welcome back to chineseclass101.com. The fastest, easiest and most fun way to learn Chinese. I am David and I am joined in the studio here by
Echo: Echo. Hi! 大家好.(Dàjiā hǎo.)
David: Yeah and we are here today with absolute beginner season 2, lesson 11.
Echo: The Brand new Chinese bike.
David: Right and it’s no mystery what happens to brand new bikes in China.
Echo: Yeah.
David: Right. And we are going to teach you how to place adjectives in the sentence.
Echo: That’s right and this conversation takes place outside a bicycle shop.
David: Right. It’s been two friends one of whom has just bought a bicycle and because they are friends, they are speaking casual mandarin as always.
Echo: 对(Duì)
David: Okay. We are going to take you to the dialogue in a sec. Before we do, we want to remind you, this material is actually getting a bit tricky. We’ve got longer sentences.
Echo: Right.
David: But this is the way Chinese people speak and if you are having trouble following with only the audio, get your hands on the PDF transcripts.
Echo: Right.
David: And you will be able to follow along much easier and learn much faster. With that though, let’s go to the dialogue.
DIALOGUE
A: 你看,我的新自行车。(Nǐ kàn, wǒ de xīn zìxíngchē.)
B: 很漂亮!(Hěn piàoliàng!)
A: 也很便宜,100块钱。(Yě hěn piányì, yìbǎi kuài.)
David: One more time, a bit slower.
A: 你看,我的新自行车。(Nǐ kàn, wǒ de xīn zìxíngchē.)
B: 很漂亮!(Hěn piàoliàng!)
A: 也很便宜,100块钱。(Yě hěn piányì, yìbǎi kuài.)
David: And now with the English.
A: 你看,我的新自行车。(Nǐ kàn, wǒ de xīn zìxíngchē.)
David: Hey look, my new bicycle.
B: 很漂亮!(Hěn piàoliàng!)
David: It's really pretty.
A: 也很便宜,100块钱。(Yě hěn piányì, yìbǎi kuài.)
David: And it was also very cheap. One hundred kuai.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
David: So I’ve actually stopped buying new bikes in China.
Echo: I think I know why.
David: Right because you walk here with that shiny new bike and you’ve just attracted the attention of lot of bike thieves.
Echo: Right it’s ugly. Yeah it’s ugly truth.
David: Right. You were telling us Echo before that you bought a new bike and you messed it up. So it looked dirty.
Echo: Yeah but it’s really a very, very good bike.
David: Yeah but it does look actually really, really bad.
Echo: Ugly, exactly.
David: Also because you ripped off one of the handle bars.
Echo: Right. Its way too protected.
David: Any way. It is the truth but our vocab today is not just about bikes. It’s about all kinds of transportation.
Echo: Right.
David: So regardless if you are biking or taxi cabbing it, this is vocab you need to know.
Echo: Right, very important.
David: Let’s get to it.

Echo: 便宜(piányì) [slowly - broken down by syllable]
Echo: 便宜(piányì) [natural native speed]
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
David: So the mode of transportation we talked about in the dialogue was
Echo: 自行车(zìxíngchē)
David: Bicycle
Echo: 自行车(zìxíngchē)
David: I lost my bicycle.
Echo: Yeah 我的自行车掉了(Wǒ de zìxíngchē diàole)
David: Which is actually misleading because chances are it was stolen.
Echo: 偷(Tōu)
David: It happens.
Echo: Yeah
David: A vehicle that is slightly harder to steal is motorcycle.
Echo: 摩托车(Mótuō chē)
David: Motorcycle.
Echo: 摩托车(Mótuō chē)
David: And this is actually a sound loan from English.
Echo: The motor 摩托. 你看我的新摩托车!(Mótuō. Nǐ kàn wǒ de xīn mótuō chē!)
David: Hey look, my new motorcycle.
Echo: 你看我的新摩托车!(Nǐ kàn wǒ de xīn mótuō chē!)
David: Hey look, my new motorcycle.
Echo: Actually now there are more and more thieves who will only steal 摩托车(Mótuō chē)
David: Also electric bikes.
Echo: Yeah.
David: Which are
Echo: 电动车(Diàndòng chē)
David: So we have got bicycles
Echo: 自行车(Zìxíngchē)
David: Motorcycles
Echo: 摩托车(Mótuō chē)
David: And electric bikes
Echo: 电动车(Diàndòng chē)
David: Another way to get around is more useful for going between cities.
Echo: Yeah.
David: And that’s the “fire car”.
Echo: 火车(Huǒchē)
David: And that of course is train.
Echo: It’s very convenient to take the train to somewhere in China, 火车.(Huǒchē.)
David: I love it.
Echo: Yeah.
David: Because it gets you right from one downtown to the other downtown.
Echo: Yeah and also like there are more and more like new kind of trains.
David: Yeah really, really fast.
Echo: Very clean and fast. Very comfortable too.
David: Right but they are still called
Echo: 火车(Huǒchē)
David: As in the sentence
Echo: 我坐火车回家(Wǒ zuò huǒchē huí jiā)
David: I am taking the train home.
Echo: 我坐火车回家(Wǒ zuò huǒchē huí jiā)
David: And you should know all of these words. We’ve covered them in previous lessons.
Echo: Yeah.
David: Our next word is suitable for getting around in the city.
Echo: 出租车(Chūzū chē)
David: Taxi.
Echo: 出租车. 出租车很方便.(Chūzū chē. Chūzū chē hěn fāngbiàn.)
David: Taxis are very convenient.
Echo: 出租车很方便(Chūzū chē hěn fāngbiàn)
David: Right although they can be expensive. Our next word is really, really cheap.
Echo: 滑板(Huábǎn)
David: Let’s hear that again.
Echo: 滑板(Huábǎn)
David: And if you guess, that is a skateboard.
Echo: Right. 滑板. 你看我的新滑板.(Huábǎn. Nǐ kàn wǒ de xīn huábǎn)
David: Look at my new skateboard.
Echo: 你看我的新滑板(Nǐ kàn wǒ de xīn huábǎn)
David: And these are actually getting popular these days especially with really young kids.
Echo: Right. 你看我的新滑板.(Nǐ kàn wǒ de xīn huábǎn.)
David: So that’s our new vocab. Tons of ways to get around town.
LESSON FOCUS
David: Join us in our grammar section as we review the possessive particle.
Echo: 的(De)
David: In previous lessons, we’ve told you
Echo: 的(De)
David: Is a structural particle that shows ownership or possession.
Echo: Right.
David: For example, to say my book
Echo: You can add 我(Wǒ) and 书(Shū) with a particle 的, 我的书.(De, wǒ de shū.)
David: Right. My
Echo: 我的(Wǒ de)
David: Book
Echo: 书. 我的书.(Shū. Wǒ de shū.)
David: Let’s take a look at another example. Your bicycle
Echo: 你的自行车(Nǐ de zìxíngchē)
David: My motorcycle.
Echo: 我的摩托车(Wǒ de mótuō chē)
David: His skateboard.
Echo: 他的滑板(Tā de huábǎn)
David: Right. In all of these cases, we have the pronoun and then
Echo: 的(De)
David: And then the object.
Echo: Right.
David: Let’s take a look at some samples sentences.
Echo: 你的车很漂亮(Nǐ de chē hěn piàoliang)
David: Your bicycle is very pretty.
Echo: Yeah it can be your car too. 你的车很漂亮(Nǐ de chē hěn piàoliang)
David: Right your vehicle is very pretty.
Echo: Right. 他的病好了(Tā de bìng hǎole)
David: His disease has cleared up.
Echo: 他的病好了(Tā de bìng hǎole)
David: His sickness is better.
Echo: Or questions 这是谁的东西?(Zhè shì shéi de dōngxī?)
David: Whose things are these?
Echo: 这是谁的东西?(Zhè shì shéi de dōngxī?)
David: And that’s literally, these are whose things? One thing we do want to point out, when you are talking about family relations and friends, often you won’t hear this (的).
Echo: Yeah.
David: For instance, you will hear someone say my mother.
Echo: 我妈妈(Wǒ māmā)
David: Your sister
Echo: 你姐姐(Nǐ jiějiě)
David: His father
Echo: 他爸爸(Tā bàba)
David: Right. In these cases, you can leave out
Echo: 的(De)
David: Right. It’s understood. So to review, to make something possessive, you take a noun, add
Echo: 的(De)
David: And then add the object.
Echo: Right.
David: Okay.
OUTRO
Echo: So I think we are done.
David: Right. If you are ready to test what we have just learned though, make sure to come to chineseclass101.com and check out our lesson specific flash cards. There is a reason everyone uses them.

Echo: Bye bye.

Hi Neville,

Yes, it's "qian2", and it exactly means money :)

In the conversation, I hear something after yibai kuai. I think it is the word that indicates money. Am I correct? It is not in the pdf transcript for this lesson.
