Welcome to ChineseClass101.com’s “Sānfēn zhōng Hànyǔ”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Chinese. |
Hēi, dàjiā hǎo , wǒ jiào Mǎ Yànrú , hěn gāoxìng yǔ dàjiā jiàn miàn. Hi,everybody , I’m Yanru Ma. Nice to meet you. |
In this series, we’re going to learn basic Chinese expressions. It’s super easy and it only takes three minutes! |
In this lesson, you’re going to learn how to introduce yourself in Chinese. |
Ready? Let's get started! |
Nǐ hǎo, wǒ jiào Chén. Hi, I’m Chen. |
[slowly] Nǐ hǎo, wǒ jiào Chén. |
Start by saying: nǐ hǎo which means “hello” (slowly) “nǐ hǎo.” Then, say “wǒ jiào,” which means “I’m called.” (slowly.) wǒ jiào. After this, say your name. Nǐ hǎo, wǒ jiào Chén. Yes, it’s just that easy. |
When you introduce yourself, you might want to tell people a little more than your name. Again, it’s easy! |
You’re learning Chinese, so let’s say you want to tell people you’re a Chinese student. |
In Chinese, this is: Zhōngwén xuésheng. |
The first word, Zhōngwén, is the word for the Chinese language. (slow) Zhōngwén . Next we have xuésheng. This means student. (slow) xuésheng. All together, it’s |
Zhōngwén xuésheng |
Now, if you want to say, I am a student, just start with the word for “I” we learned before. wǒ. Then add shì. This means “is” (slow) shì. shì. |
After this add the word for student. Do you remember it? |
Zhōngwén xuésheng |
Put them all together, and you have |
wǒ shì Zhōngwén xuésheng |
Remember, start by saying hello, then say your name: |
Nǐ hǎo, wǒ jiào Chén. |
Follow with a little bit about you: |
wǒ shì Zhōngwén xuésheng |
And now you have a nice self introduction: |
Nǐ hǎo, wǒ jiào Chén. Wǒ shì Zhōngwén xuésheng. |
Now it’s time for Chen’s tips. |
When men introduce themselves, it’s very common for them to shake hands. In business situations, women will do this too. In social or casual situations however, it is common for women to simply nod or smile in order to show friendliness. |
Do you know how we say “thank you” in Chinese? Come to our next lesson and you’ll see how easy it is. Zàijiàn! See you then! |

你好,Liané!(Nǐ hǎo, Liané! "Hello, Liané!")
Your name "Liané Trollip" can be translated to Chinese as "莉安妮·特罗利普" (Lì'ānnī · Tèluólìpǔ). This is a phonetic translation, where each Chinese character represents a similar sound to your name.

Hi! Sylvia,
你好!(Nǐ hǎo! "Hello!") 😊
Your name, Sylvia, can be translated to Chinese as 西尔维娅 (Xī'ěrwéiyà). It's a beautiful name!
To write in Hanzi (Chinese characters), you can try downloading a keyboard app on your device or checking your keyboard settings. Sites like this one could also come in handy: https://www.lexilogos.com/keyboard/Chinese.htm

If I may ask, is there a logic behind picking or choosing names in china?
I mean my First name is Moaaz and my last name is Hefny, in my case what would my name in Chinese be?

You can also add 我学中文 Wǒ xué Zhōngwén I study Chinese, to make it clearer.

Hi!
Today I used this sentence with a Chinese person I met, '我是中文学生'/ wǒ shì Zhōngwén xuésheng, but I'm not sure the person understood me as "I am a Chinese language student.", is this okay?
I'm afraid I might have meant that I'm a Chinese student, not a Chinese language student (someone studying Chinese).
Thanks!
