(Gōng de, Lābùlāduō.)

David: And now with an English translation.
Echo: 这是您的狗吗?(Zhè shì nín de gǒu ma?)
David: Is this your dog?
(Shì wǒjiā Duōduo)
David: Yes its name is 多多。(Duōduo.)
Shénme pǐnzhǒng?)
David: Is it a female? What breed is it?
(Gōng de, Lābùlāduō.)
David: It is male and a Labrador.
(O, zhēn tīnghuà.)
David: Oh it’s really obedient.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
David: Chinese people love their pets.
(Duì, hǎoxiàng tāmen de háizi yīyàng.)
David: Yes and if you are looking for a good chance to practice Chinese, going out at 6 or 7 o'clock when people are walking their pets in apartment compounds
Echo: 没错。(Méi cuò.)
David: Good chance. And you are going to use the vocab we are teaching today.
Echo: Yeah 对。(Duì.)

(pǐnzhǒng, pǐnzhǒng, Lābùlāduō.)
David: Labrador.
(Lābùlāduō, Lābùlāduō, tīnghuà.)
David: Obedient.
(tīnghuà, tīnghuà.)
David: Let’s take a closer look at some of these words and phrases. We are talking about breeds of dogs first of all, we have the word breed.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Echo: 品种。(pǐnzhǒng.)
David: Breed.
Echo: 品种。(pǐnzhǒng.)
David: What breed is your dog?
(Nín de gǒu shì shénme pǐnzhǒng?)
David: What breed is your dog?
(Nín de gǒu shì shénme pǐnzhǒng?)
David: In the dialogue, the answer was the Labrador.
(Lābùlāduō.)
David: A Labrador or a Lab.
(Lābùlāduō.)
David: But in China, Labs aren’t that common.
Echo: 对。(Duì.)
David: Because they are bigger dogs.
Echo: 太大了。(Tài dàle.)
David: Yeah and in cities like Beijing, there are restrictions on where you can have big dogs.
Echo: Right like Husky or 拉布拉多。(Lābùlāduō.)
David: So what are some more common dogs that you are going to run into?
(Běijīng jīng bā.)
David: A Pekingese
Echo: 京巴。(Jīng bā.)
David: Right which is the 京(Jīng) is from Beijing.
(Bā shì hǎbāgǒu)
David: Yes so it’s a Beijing 哈叭狗 (Hā bā gǒu) or in short.
Echo: 京巴。(Jīng bā.)
David: Right. So if you see the Pekingese, you can tell people, hey your Pekingese is really obedient.
(Duì, nǐ de jīng bā zhēn tīnghuà.)
David: Your Pekingese is really obedient.
(Nǐ de jīng bā zhēn tīnghuà.)
David: Other popular dogs.
(Bǐrú shuō sōng shī.)
David: These are new popular dogs but they are the lion dogs.
(Duì, hǎoxiàng shīzi yīyàng.)
David: Yes.
Echo: 松狮。(Sōng shī.)
David: Right. And they are difficult to tell males or females. So if you see them, you can ask, is your lion dog male or female?
(Nǐ de sōng shī shì gōng de háishì mǔ de?)
David: And if you don’t know the breed, you can just drop it and you can say, is your dog male or female.
(Nǐ de gǒu shì gōng de háishì mǔ de?)
David: Most dogs in Beijing are not going to be purebred. So if it’s not a purebred, someone might tell you I don’t know what kind of dog it is. It’s a mixed breed.
(Yángròu chuàn de chuàn.)
David: Right. So people don’t say
Echo: 混血。(Hùnxiě.)
David: Right which we’ve covered before.
Echo: That’s for people.
David: Yeah that’s mixed blood. It’s only for people.
Echo: Yeah you can say (Ō, nǐ de hùnxiě'er zhēn piàoliang.)
David: Right. Your mixed race child is pretty. However with animals, we don’t use this.
Echo:对。(Duì.)
David: We say
Echo: 串(Chuàn) That’s pretty Beijing too.
David: Yeah. My dog is a mixed breed.
(Wǒ de gǒu shì chuàn.)
David: Right. Not for consumption okay. Anyway moving on, we have the words male
Echo:公的。(Gōng de.)
David: And female.
Echo: 母的。(mǔ de.)
David: And we are going to talk about these in a bit more detail in our grammar section.
Echo: 没错。(Méi cuò.)

Lesson focus

David: It’s grammar time. Okay our grammar section today it’s not technically grammar. We just want to spend a bit more time talking about dog stuff.
Echo: Yeah.
David: Right and actually animal stuff in general.
Echo: And animal stuff and we want to clarify like one thing, very important thing.
David: The most important is the male, female.
(Gōng de, mǔ de.)
David: Right. With animals, always, always, always use
(Gōng de, mǔ de.)
David: Do not use
(Nán de, nǚ de.)
David: Right. So if you see someone with a dog, you can ask them
(Shì gōng de háishì mǔ de?)
David: If you see a parent with a child,
Echo: Oh never use
David: If you see a parent with a child, you can ask them
(Shì nán de háishì nǚ de?)
David: Don’t get those mixed up.
(Shì gōng de háishì mǔ de? Shì nán de háishì nǚ de?)
David: Right. I mixed that up once in a restaurant and it was embarrassing. I asked a parent if their child was 公的,母的 (Gōng de, mǔ de) and…
Echo: They laughed?
David: They weren’t that pleased. Moving on, something else we want to touch on is the name of the dog.
Echo: 多多。(Duōduō.)
David: Right. In the dialogue, we heard this.
(Shì wǒjiā duōduō.)
David: Right 我家 (Wǒjiā) here means my home. It’s the 多多(Duōduō) from my home. So dog names and pet names are usually reduplicated single characters.
Echo: 没错。(Méi cuò)
David: Right. With cats, we will often hear cats called
(Mī mī or qiú qiú.)
David: Right.
(Māo māo yě kěyǐ.)
David: Yeah there is cat-cat and with dogs, it’s also common to hear
(Bǐrú gǒu gǒu huòzhě shì bèi bèi huòzhě shì niúniú.)
David: Yeah or baby. People often call animals just baby.
(Bǎobèi huòzhě shì bǎobǎo, dōu kěnéng.)
David: Yes. Note that when we are reduplicating these characters, the second character is in the neutral tone.
Echo: 对。(Duì.)
David: Okay. Listen to these again, pay attention to how there is almost no emphasis on that second sound.
(Duōduō, mī mī, qiú qiú, bǎobǎo, bèi bèi, niúniú.)
David: Right and that last one is cow cow. It is actually a common dog name.
Echo: 对。(Duì.)
David: People are not really….
(Tèbié shì zài niú nián de zhèxiē gǒu.)
David: Yeah. Okay so if you are learning Chinese and you live in an apartment complex in China, do check out dog times in the evenings. It’s a thing.
(Kěyǐ ràng nǐ gēn dàjiā zuò péngyǒu.)
David: Right. Adults play together, the dogs play together, kids play together. It’s a good way of meeting people and a good way of using your Chinese.
Echo: 没错。(Méi cuò.)

Outro

David: Okay. For now though, that’s all the time we have. From Beijing, I am David.
Echo: 我是(Wǒ shì) Echo。
David: Thanks a lot for listening and we will see you on the site.
Bye bye.
