| Peter: it was just a few simple changes to my goal that made a massive difference. In fact, I now apply these to every goal I have because they work so well. |
| Becky: What kinds of changes? |
| Peter: First, measureable goals. Becky, most people typically aim for a vague resolution like “This year, I’ll master Japanese or Chinese.” or “This year, I’ll lose weight.” But vague goals are problematic. So I started aiming for smaller, more measurable goals, most importantly with deadlines. In my case, it was to “Speak 20 Minutes of German conversation by December 31st, 2016.” |
| Becky: Oh, that definitely sounds manageable. After all, you can’t expect to magically become fluent. You put a number on it. |
| Peter: Exactly. In my case, once I had the number, I started setting smaller, monthly goals that would add up to 20 minutes by the end of the December 2016. |
| Becky: Are there any other effective tips you can give to our listeners for 2017? |
| Peter: Listeners, write down a small, measurable goal, set a deadline, and put it somewhere you’ll see it every day. I know it sounds strange, but believe it or not, it really keeps you focused. |
