A native Cantonese speaker once told me that two very close friends could be having a very friendly chat in Cantonese and to a foreigner it sounds like they are arguing! :-) The heavy intonations make me tend to agree! :razz::razz:

I picked up a few phrases from a friend from Hong Kong and I like to use them when I can. But Mandarin's still my favorite! And I'm grateful to the instruction I've received at CC101!

I left a reply yesterday but somehow it's gone... Anyway.

I don't understand his Cantonese except for the first sentence 'nei hou leng ahhhhh', 'you're so beautiful'. But it's absolutely funny the way he speaks Cantonese. :lol: Also I can see how Cantonese is perceived by English speakers. Seems that the stereotype of Cantonese is a chopped loud tonal language.:smile:

@Anthony

Garth: Does this mean you are going to marry her?

Wayne: Garth, marriage is punishment for shoplifting in some countries.

:lol:

'Only 50 percent of the marriages end up getting divorce!' Quoted from Joe Wong.

@Anthony,

Yes, the movie is a classic. Rob Lowe was Mike Meyer's competition in the movie if I recall correctly.

@Nicole, did you find the Cantonese sections of this movie humorous?

I remember sitting Nicole down in the office, showing her the clip and asking her what she thought of Rob Lowe's cantonese. Great stuff.

One of many favorite quotes is -

Garth: Does this mean you are going to marry her?

Wayne: Garth, marriage is punishment for shoplifting in some countries. (Classic)

I also remember watching an documentary on the movie, and they have an interview with Rob Lowe, with hi saying that learning that Cantonese dialogue was the hardest thing he has had to do as an actor.

I'm eagerly awaiting Greek !

I do hope it goes well beyond the elementary level - there are plenty of opportunities to learn set phrases or use of Greek to elementary level on the net and and from books and CDs, but what the dedicated learner needs is a source gving intensive practice in listening and speaking using ALL tenses and aspects of many Greek verbs, not only a few commonly used ones.
