Welcome to Can-Do Chinese by ChineseClass101.com.
大家好,我是你们的老师李殷如。(Dàjiā hǎo , Wǒ shì nǐmen de lǎoshī Lǐ Yīn Rú.)
Hi everyone! I’m your teacher Yinru Li.
In this lesson, we will learn how to give your email address in Chinese.
This is Karen Lee, and she is at city hall.
The clerk asks her, “Please give me your email address,” which is
请把你的邮箱地址给我
Listen to the conversation, and focus on the response.
Clerk:请把你的邮箱地址给我。(Qǐng bǎ nǐ de yóuxiāng dìzhǐ gěi wǒ.)
Karen Lee: 我的邮箱地址是karen@jpod101.com。 (Wǒ de yóuxiāng dìzhǐ shì @jpod101.com diǎn com.)
Listen again to Karen’s response.
Karen Lee: 我的邮箱地址是karen@jpod101.com。
Karen Lee: Wǒ de yóuxiāng dìzhǐ shì karen@jpod101.com diǎn com.
Listen again to Karen’s response with the English translation.
我的邮箱地址是karen@jpod101.com。
My email address is Karen@jpod101.com.com
Let’s take a closer look at the request and the response.
First the request. The clerk requests Karen’s email address by saying, “Please give me your email address.”
Clerk:请把你的邮箱地址给我。
The key word here is 邮箱地址 “email address” 邮箱地址
underline this word with your marker
the first part 邮箱 “mail box” 邮箱
and the second part 地址 means “address” 地址
Together, 邮箱地址 “email address” 邮箱地址
Remember this because you’ll see it again in Karen’s response.
The rest of the phrase means, “Please give me your…”
请 means “please.” 请
把...(什么)...给我 means “to give (something) to me”. 把...(什么)...给我
你的 means “your” 你的
All together, it’s 请把你的邮箱地址给我。 “Please give me your email address.”
请把你的邮箱地址给我。
Let’s take a closer look at the response.
Karen says, “我的邮箱地址是Karen@jpod101.com。”
My email address is Karen@jpod101.com
This first part of the response is 我的 “my” 我的
The word 我 means “I” 我,
and the second word 的 is the possessive marking particle. 的
Together 我的 means “my” 我的
underline 邮箱地址 with the same color used before
Next, remember this word?
邮箱地址 meaning “email address” in Chinese. 邮箱地址
Note, 邮箱 “mailbox” 邮箱 This can refer to a physical mailbox or electronic one.
To specify electronic mailbox add the word 电子 meaning “electronic” 电子
together 电子邮箱 means “electronic mailbox” or “email”. 电子邮箱
Combining the first two parts of the response, 我的邮箱地址 my email address 我的邮箱地址
Next is the word 是 meaning “is” 是
Combining this part of the response with the others,
我的邮箱地址是... “My email address is...” 我的邮箱地址是...
This is an important pattern for your task.
And finally is Karen’s email address,
Karen@jpod101.com。 Karen@jpod101.com。
First she spells out her name: “k-a-r-e-n.”
Next is @, pronounced “at” . “at”
If the person you’re speaking with speaks English, the person may pronounce it as “aite”,
Some Chinese may refer to this @ sign as “a 圈儿” . A is the letter a, and 圈儿 means “circle”. So if you say a 圈儿, people may understand you as well.
Next, “jpod 101.com”
“jpod 101.com”
1 is pronounced as “yao” so it won’t sound like the number 7 “qi”.
Next,
the “dot” is 点, 点
or 点儿 as people from North China will say it.
And finally, “com” “com”
Some people may also spell com out as c-o-m.
The email address all together is Karen@jpod101.com
Educated people in China, which will be most people you deal with in business, wouldn't have a problem pronouncing the letters of the alphabet. One thing to keep in mind is that they may speak English with a Chinese accent, just like I was trying to do throughout the lesson when saying the letters. When it comes to the 26 English letters, C, G, J, L, N, V are the most mispronounced ones for Chinese speakers. They may say the letter C as “sei”, G as “ji”, J also as “ji”, L as “aile”, N “ehn”, V as “wei”. Also people from different parts of the China have different accents when speaking English AND Mandarin. If you are not sure about what you heard, a good thing to do is to always check with the person you’re speaking with and make sure you got them right.
Let’s look at some examples.
Here are two email addresses.
y@jpod101.com
123@jpod101.com
First, do you remember the phrase for “my”?
我的, my, 我的
And the word for “email address?“
邮箱地址, email address, 邮箱地址
And do you remember the word for “is”
是, is, 是
These are pieces to the key sentence pattern 我的邮箱地址是, “My email address is….,” 我的邮箱地址是
Imagine this is your email address: “y@jpod101.com” (say word in quotes in Chinese)
Use the response pattern to say, “My email address is “y@jpod101.com” (say word in quotes in Chinese)
The correct response is:
我的邮箱地址是 y@jpod101.com。

The correct response:
我的邮箱地址是 123@jpod101.com。

Now, imagine you’re Mark.

After the clerk’s request, use the sentence pattern to say, “My e-mail address is jpod101.com”
