Hey guys, today we are going to cover a greeting you will hear when you enter a business or a restaurant or something like that. A lot of times when you come in, people will say to you 欢迎光临 。(Huānyíng guānglín.). It means welcome. Let’s go over it really slowly, all right, 欢迎光临 。(Huānyíng guānglín.). One more time, 欢迎光临 。(Huānyíng guānglín.). All right, 欢迎(huān yíng) means welcome and then 光临 (guāng lín) means presence. So your presence is welcome. All right, so the tones are 欢(huān) first tone, flat tone, 迎(yíng) second tone, rising tone, 光 (guāng) first tone, flat tone and then 临 (lín) also second tone, rising tone. So one more time, 欢迎光临 。(Huānyíng guānglín.). Now most of us westerners me being American, we find this kind of throws us off. You know we come into a store and everyone yells out 欢迎光临 。(Huānyíng guānglín.) and well I find most of the times kind of taken aback. I don’t really know what to say. You know, but in America, most of the time people don’t yell out Welcome when you come into a store. So a lot of the times I walk in and they go 欢迎光临 。(Huānyíng guānglín.) and I just sort of pause and don’t know what to say. It’s appropriate not to respond to this. Many Chinese people they just kind of ignore it or they smile politely or something like that. Maybe you’ve acknowledged that the person has said something to you but you don’t need to say anything back to them. There is no set response to this greeting. However if you want to, you can say hello which we learned before as 你好!(Nǐ hǎo!). That would be polite if someone says something to you, it’s nice to say hello to acknowledge that they are there and then they might say hello to you too but again you don’t actually need to say anything. It’s perfectly fine just to smile or just to keep on your way. Now when you are leaving a place of business, people will often say 欢迎再来 。(Huānyíng zàilái.). One more time, it’s 欢迎再来 。(Huānyíng zàilái.). Last time, 欢迎再来 。(Huānyíng zàilái.). Literally this means welcome again come. 欢迎(huān yíng) welcome, 再 (zài) again and 来 (lái) to come. So welcome again come, please come again 欢迎再来 。(Huānyíng zàilái.). All right, let’s go over the tones. We did 欢迎(huān yíng) before but it’s first tone, then second tone 欢迎(huān yíng) and then 再 (zài) is fourth tone, the falling tone 再 (zài) and then the last one is 来 (lái) the second tone, the rising tone, 欢迎再来 。(Huānyíng zàilái.). This will be strange at first but don’t worry. Once you are in China for a while, you will get used to it. All right, to close our today’s lesson, we’d like you to practice what we’ve just learned. I will provide you with the English equivalent of a phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud. You will have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So 加油(jiā yóu)! Welcome, 欢迎光临 。(Huānyíng guānglín.). Please come again, 欢迎再来 。(Huānyíng zàilái.).
