All right guys, you are on the bus, you bought your ticket, you have been standing there for 10 to 20 minutes and you are starting to get this thinking and feeling like you might have passed your stop. You can’t really see outside the windows because there is too many people. So you can’t read the stations as they pass. There is no sign up there in English that says which station you are getting into and so you are getting kind of worried. This might be the time to ask somebody when your stop is going to be. A really great way to avoid this situation is when you get on the bus, when you buy your ticket, you tell the person selling the tickets 到的时候请叫我(Dào de shíhou qǐng jiào wǒ.) that means, when we arrive, please tell me, all right because most of the time, the next station is announced on this garbled announcement machine or it is just announced very quickly and loudly by the person selling the tickets. So you may not hear what station you are up to but it’s really interesting that the people selling the tickets on the bus are actually very attentive and helpful and will always never fail, never once has this ever failed me. They will always tap you and say, this is your stop. So let’s go over this phrase. It’s probably one of the most useful phrases you are going to learn. So the phrase is, 到的时候请叫我(Dào de shíhou qǐng jiào wǒ.) let’s break it down by meaning, all right, 到(dào) means to arrive 的(de) is the possessive particle and 时候(shíhou) means time. So 到的时候(Dào de shíhou) means when we arrive, the time we arrive, the time of arrival, 请(qǐng) means please 叫(jiào) means to call out or to tell somebody something and 我(wǒ) means me. So what you are saying is, the time of arrival, please tell me, please call out to me. Now how does she know where you are going. I am sure a lot of you are asking, okay the time when we arrive, but when we arrive where. Remember that when you bought your ticket, she asked where you were going. She said 到哪儿(Dào nǎr?) where are you going and you said 到北京站(Dào Běijīng zhàn.) I am going to Beijing station. Right after that when you ask her 到的时候请叫我(Dào de shíhou qǐng jiào wǒ.) she will know that you mean when we arrive at Beijing station, please tell me. So let’s go over this phrase 到的时候请叫我(Dào de shíhou qǐng jiào wǒ.) All right tone by tone. 到(dào) is fourth tone falling tone 的(de) has no tone 时(shí) is second tone, rising tone and候(hou) also has no tone. So 到的时候(Dào de shíhou) and then 请(qǐng) is third tone, the falling, rising tone 叫(jiào) is fourth tone, falling tone 我(wǒ) is third tone, falling rising tone. So 请叫我(qǐng jiào wǒ) please tell me 请叫我(qǐng jiào wǒ), 到的时候请叫我(Dào de shíhou qǐng jiào wǒ.) All right guys, sometimes the bus is way too crowded. The person selling tickets is all the way on the other side of the bus trying to reach those people there who are still trying to avoid their fare and you are afraid that the next stop is going to be your stop and you just can’t miss it. So you turn to the guy sitting next to you and you say to him 下一个站是什么(Xià yīge zhàn shì shénme?) So first, let’s do the meaning 下(xià) means down or in this case, it can mean next 一个(yī ge) means one 站(zhàn) means station. So 下一个站(xià yīge zhàn) is next one station. Then 是什么 (shì shénme), 是(shì) means is and 什么 (shén me) means what. So next one station is what. All right guys, let’s try this phrase again 下一个站是什么(Xià yīge zhàn shì shénme?) one more time 下一个站是什么(Xià yīge zhàn shì shénme?) What is the next station. So now let’s do the tones 下(xià) is fourth tone, the falling tone 一个(yīge), 一(yī) E is first tone, flat tone, 个(ge) has no tone 站(zhàn) is fourth tone, falling tone, 是(shì) is also fourth tone, falling tone 什么(shén me), 什(shén) is second tone, rising tone and 么(me) has no tone. So 下一个站是什么(Xià yīge zhàn shì shénme?).
All right, to close our today’s lesson, we’d like you to practice what we’ve just learned. I will provide you with the English equivalent of a phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud. You will have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So 加油(Jiā yóu!) when we arrive, please tell me, 到的时候请叫我(Dào de shíhou qǐng jiào wǒ.). What is the next station 下一个站是什么(Xià yīge zhàn shì shénme?)
