Michael: Today’s phrase is I would like as in asking for something in a street stall or in a convenient store. In Chinese, I would like is 请给我(qíng géi wǒ). One more time, 请给我(qíng géi wǒ). Now here it is again in normal speed, 请给我(qíng géi wǒ). This is the most basic way to say I would like but you still need to say what you would like or you can just use your body language. Just say “请给我(qíng géi wǒ)” and point at what you would like. You can use this anywhere you go and everyone should understand you but let’s try to build this up a bit. Shall we? Let’s try adding the word this to the end of it, so I would like this 请给我这个(Qíng géi wǒ zhège), one more time, 请给我这个(Qíng géi wǒ zhège.). All right, so to go through the phrase word by word, 请(qǐng) which is third tone but becomes second tone in this phrase means please, 给(gěi) which is also third tone but becomes 给(géi) second tone in this phrase is to give, 我(wǒ) is me or I and 这个(zhège) means this. So now that we’ve learned this, we might as well learn that. That is 那个(nàge), one more time, 那个(nàge). Now let’s break it down by tones. 那(nà) is fourth tone or the falling tone and 个(ge) actually has no tone. So one more time 那个(nàge). Could you get that? 那个(nàge). So let’s use this with the phrase we just learned. I would like that, 请给我那个(Qíng géi wǒ nàge).
Okay to close our today’s lesson, we would like for you to practice what we’ve just learned. I will provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for saying it out loud. You will have a few seconds before I give you the phrase. So 加油(Jiā yóu)! Okay here we go. I would like, 请给我(qíng géi wǒ). I would like this, 请给我这个(Qíng géi wǒ zhège). I would like that, 请给我那个(Qíng géi wǒ nàge).
