Hi guys, today we are going to do a couple of phrases that have to do with work, things that you might say at work but they also have uses at other places too. The first phrase we are going to do means, I am going to leave first. 我先走了(Wǒ xiān zǒu le.) This can be used at work if you are going home before other people. You say 我先走了(Wǒ xiān zǒu le.) The tones for this are third tone 我(wǒ), first tone 先(xiān), third tone again 走(zǒu) and then no tone on 了(le). Broken down by component 我(wǒ) means I, 先(xiān) means first, 走(zǒu) means to walk or in lots of cases to leave a place and 了(le) indicates a change of situation. You are leaving now. So altogether it means I first leave, 我先走了(Wǒ xiān zǒu le.), I am leaving now, 我先走了(Wǒ xiān zǒu le.) Like I said, this can be used at work but it can also be used when you are hanging out with your friends. If you are going to be the first one to go home, maybe you have to get up early for work the next morning, you say to your friends 我先走了(Wǒ xiān zǒu le.) I am going home first 我先走了(Wǒ xiān zǒu le.) Another phrase is 辛苦了(Xīn kǔ le.) This is first tone 辛(xīn), third tone 苦(kǔ) and then no tone on the 了(le), 辛苦了(Xīn kǔ le.). Literally this means very hard as in the work was very hard, 辛苦了(Xīn kǔ le.). You use this often at the end of a day when you are saying goodbye to people, 辛苦了(Xīn kǔ le.) That means you are expressing your appreciation for the fact that everybody works very hard. Oh everybody had a hard day, 辛苦了(Xīn kǔ le.) and other people will respond to you 辛苦了(Xīn kǔ le.), but you can also use this when somebody tells you about something really bad that’s happened to them or something hard that they’ve had to do and you can express sympathy by saying 辛苦了(Xīn kǔ le.). Remember the tones are first tone 辛(xīn), third tone 苦(kǔ) and then no tone 了(le), 辛苦了(Xīn kǔ le.).
All right, to close our today’s lesson, we’d like you to practice what we’ve just learned. I will provide you with the English equivalent of a phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud. You will have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So 加油(Jiā yóu!) I am leaving first, 我先走了(Wǒ xiān zǒu le.) Thanks for your hard work or you worked hard, 辛苦了(Xīn kǔ le.)
