Taiwanese Mandarin Survival Phrases Lesson 13: How Much?
In this lesson, we will learn how to ask “How much?”
In Chinese, this is 多少錢(Duōshǎo qián)?
Now let’s break it down by tone:
多(duō) is in first tone.
少(shǎo) is in third tone.
錢(qián) is in second tone.
Let’s break down the meaning:
多(duō) means "a lot" or "many."
少(shǎo) means "few."
多少(duōshǎo) together means "How much?" or "How many?"
錢(qián) means "money."
Together, this phrase means “how much money?”
Altogether, we have 多少錢(Duōshǎo qián)?
Listen again, one more time, slowly:
[Slow] 多少錢(Duōshǎo qián)?
[Normal] 多少錢(Duōshǎo qián)?
You can also add “this” to the phrase to ask, "How much is this?"
“This” in Chinese is 這個 (zhège)
Let’s break it down by tone:
這 (zhè) is in fourth tone.
個 (ge) has no tone.
