Dialogue

Lesson Transcript

Do you know how to talk about future actions in Chinese?
Welcome to Three Step Chinese Practice by ChineseClass101.com. In this lesson, you'll practice using 会 (huì) to talk about future actions.
Let's look at the main dialogue.
Two people are having a conversation.
谢谢你的食物!好好吃。(Xièxie nǐ de shíwù! Hǎohǎo chī.)
"Thank you for the food! It's so tasty."
不用谢。丽莎,你暑假会做什么?(Bùyòng xiè. Lìshā, nǐ shǔjià huì zuò shénme?)
"You're welcome. Lisha, what will you do during summer vacation?"
我和一些朋友会去青岛。(Wǒ hé yìxiē péngyǒu huì qù Qīngdǎo.)
"Some friends and I will go to Qingdao."
哦?你会去旅游吗?不会去找工作吗?(Ó? Nǐ huì qù lǚyóu ma? Bú huì qù zhǎo gōngzuò ma?)
"Oh? Are you going to travel? Not looking for a job?"
In this lesson, we focused on using the word 会 (huì), meaning "will," to talk about future actions.
The basic structure is: Subject + (Time) + 会/不会 + Verb (+ Object)
For example, in the sentence 我和一些朋友会去青岛 (Wǒ hé yìxiē péngyǒu huì qù Qīngdǎo), we're saying "Some friends and I will go to Qingdao."
If we want to say someone won't do something, we simply add 不 before 会 to make 不会 (bù huì), like in
不会去找工作吗? (Bú huì qù zhǎo gōngzuò ma?), which means "Not looking for a job?"
Adding 吗 (ma) to the end turns the sentence into a yes–no question.
We can also use this pattern to ask open questions, by ending with 什么 (shénme), meaning "what."
For instance, 你暑假会做什么 (Nǐ shǔjià huì zuò shénme?) means "What will you do during summer vacation?"
These structures let us describe and ask about future plans in a simple and natural way.
Let's practice this grammar in this episode!
