Dialogue

Lesson Transcript

Do you know how to say what kind of thing you want in Chinese?
Welcome to Three Step Chinese Practice by ChineseClass101.com. In this lesson, you will practice saying what kind of thing you want in Chinese.
Let's look at the main dialogue.
Two people are having a conversation.
周先生,你想要什么样的画?(Zhōu xiānshēng, nǐ xiǎng yào shénme yàng de huà?)
"Mr. Zhou, what kind of painting would you like?"
我想要有意思的画。(Wǒ xiǎng yào yǒuyìsi de huà.)
"I want an interesting painting."
In this dialogue, we learned two very useful patterns for asking and answering questions about your preferences.
Pattern 1: Asking
你想要什么样的 + Noun?
Nǐ xiǎng yào shénme yàng de + Noun?
"What kind of [noun] do you want?"
And
Pattern 2: Answering
我想要 + [Adjective phrase] + 的 + Noun
Wǒ xiǎng yào + [adjective phrase] + de + noun
"I want a [Adjective phrase] [noun]"
Remember:
The character 的 (de) is essential — it connects the adjective phrase to the noun and shows what kind of thing you're talking about. This pattern is very common in everyday Chinese. You can't skip the 的 — without it, the sentence sounds incorrect or unclear, because it's not obvious what the description is referring to.
Let's practice this grammar in this episode!
