Dialogue

Lesson Transcript

Do you know how to talk about policies at a hotel in Chinese?
Welcome to Three Step Chinese Practice by ChineseClass101.com. In this lesson, you'll practice how to talk about check-in times, opening hours, and more.
Let's look at the main dialogue.
Two people are having a conversation.
入住下午3点开始。(Rùzhù xiàwǔ sān diǎn kāishǐ.)
"Check-in starts at 3 p.m."
我们还有三十分钟。这是酒店的大堂。你想要一点咖啡吗?(Wǒmen hái yǒu sānshí fēnzhōng. Zhè shì jiǔdiàn de dàtáng. Nǐ xiǎng yào yīdiǎn kāfēi ma?)
"We still have 30 minutes. This is the hotel lobby. Do you want some coffee?"
In this dialogue, we learned a very useful pattern for talking about when something begins.
This sentence follows the pattern: Noun + (从) + [starting time] + 开始, meaning "something starts at [time]."
The verb 开始 (kāishǐ) means "to start," and 从 (cóng), meaning "from," is optional in simple statements.
For example:
入住下午3点开始 (Rùzhù xiàwǔ sān diǎn kāishǐ) — "Check-in starts at 3 p.m."
To talk about how long something lasts, you can use:
从 + [starting time] + 到 + [ending time], meaning "from [start] to [end]."
Here, 到 (dào) means "to" or "until."
This is a handy pattern for talking about hours, schedules, or event times.
Let's practice talking about time and schedules in this episode!
