Eric: Top 25 Chinese Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 23- Whose is this? in Chinese. In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Chinese learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “Whose is this?” In Chinese, this is
Cho: 这是谁的?
The first word in the question is
Cho: 这
Eric: meaning “this” in English.
Cho: (Slow, by syllable) 这
Eric: Listen again and repeat.
Cho: 这
{Pause}
Eric: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Cho: 是
Eric: meaning “to be.”
Cho: (Slow, by syllable) 是
Eric: Now repeat.
Cho: 是
{Pause}
Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Cho: 这是
{pause}
Next is
Cho: 谁的
Eric: meaning “whose.”
Cho: (Slow, by syllable) 谁的
Eric: Now repeat.
Cho: 谁的
{Pause}
Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Cho: 这是谁的?
{pause}
Eric: It literally means “this is whose?”
Eric: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question, “whose is this?”
Cho: 是我的。
Eric: "It's mine.” Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Cho: (Slow) 是我的。
{pause}
Eric: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word,
Cho: 是
Eric: means “to be.”
Cho: (Slow, by syllable) 是
Eric: Now repeat
Cho: 是
{Pause}
Eric: And after that comes
Cho: 我的
Eric: meaning “mine.”
Cho: (Slow, by syllable) 我的
Eric: Now repeat.
Cho: 我的
{Pause}
Eric: Listen to the speaker say, “it's mine,” and then repeat.
Cho: 是我的。
{pause}
Eric: To expand on the pattern, replace “mine” with “his.”
Cho: 他的
Eric: his.
Cho: (slow) 他的 (regular) 他的
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “his.”
Cho: 是他的。
Eric: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “mine” with “his.” Say, “it's his.”
{pause}
Cho: 是他的。
Eric: To use a different phrase, replace “his” with “my mother's.”
Cho: 我妈妈的
Eric: “my mother's”
Cho: (slow) 我妈妈的 (regular) 我妈妈的
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “my mother's”
Cho: 是我妈妈的。
Eric: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “his” with “my mother's.” Say “It's my mother's.”
{pause}
Cho: 是我妈妈的。
Eric: To expand on the pattern, replace “my mother's” with “boss's.”
Cho: 老板的.
Eric: boss's
Cho: (slow) 老板的 (regular) 老板的
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “boss's”
Cho: 是老板的。
Eric: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “my mother's” with “boss's.” Say “It's my boss's.”
{pause}
Cho: 是老板的。
Eric: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting China, and someone asks you to whom something belongs. You want to say, “it's mine.” Respond to the question.
Cho:这是谁的? (five seconds) 是我的。
Eric: Now, you want to say, “it’s his.” Respond to the question.
Cho: 这是谁的? (five seconds) 是他的。
Eric: Now, you want to say “it’s my mother’s.” Answer the speaker's question.
Cho: 这是谁的? (five seconds) 是我妈妈的。
Eric: Now, you want to say “It's my boss's.” Respond to the question.
