Hey listeners! Did we miss any other common questions? Leave a comment and tell us what other questions you use a lot!
Actually we use 你好吗？when we meet our friends who we haven’t met for a period of time.
Either above is OK.
But is 你好吗? ever used among native Chinese speakers?
Chinese people never say 你好吗? which is the literal translation of How are you? … after the habit of westerners. It is usually arranged in the first few lessons of almost all Chinese-as-a-Foreign-Language textbooks for the convenience of structure teaching and for the communicative need. Why? Because both the question and answer belong to typical adj-predicate sentence patterns used exclusively in Chinese.
The 4 above are all natural Chinese.
The main part of this sentence is 你 学 中文.
And we add the question part 多久(久, adjective) before 中文, as 中文 is a noun, so we use 的 between them.
3. 最近怎么样？ is more used to close friends if you haven’t met each other for a period of time.
For the “how long” question, would you ever say “你学中文学了多久了”? In other words, do you ever need to repeat the verb for a VO when asking “how long”? And when is 的 used? As in, 你学了多久的中文了？(Admittedly that latter sounds odd.)
Also, is 你好吗 really used anywhere? In mainland China my understanding is that 最近怎么样？is preferred .
