INTRODUCTION
David: Welcome to chineseclass101.com. I am David.
Echo: Hi! 大家好,我是(Dàjiā hǎo, wǒ shì)Echo.
David: And here we are with absolute beginner season 2, lesson 15.
Echo: The broken refrigerator.
David: Right. There are a lot of these around Beijing.
Echo: Right.
David: If you go to convenient store, it’s the summer. You see the fridge, you think I could use a cold drink and it’s not working.
Echo: In this lesson, you will learn how to talk about different types of drinks.
David: Yeah different kinds of warm drinks.
Echo: Yeah.
David: So we’ve got a conversation that takes place in a restaurant.
Echo: In between a customer and a waitress.
David: And they are going to be talking casually.
Echo: As usual.
David: Yes. So we are going to take you to the dialogue in a sec. Before we do that, we want to remind you, one of the great ways of learning is to get your hands on the premium transcript printed out and follow along while you listen. It is going to reinforce the Chinese characters and it’s going to show your opinions, you know exactly how to pronounce all of these words. That being said though, let’s get to the dialogue.
DIALOGUE

B: 冰箱坏了。(Bīngxiāng huài le.)
B: The refrigerator is broken.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
David: Okay two strange things about this dialogue. One is I really don’t know how people in China can drink warm beer. I don’t know how people drink beer with ice in it.
Echo: No they don’t?
David: No but well people in China do. If you ask for a cold beer sometimes, you are going to get a glass of beer with ice in it.
Echo: Yeah it’s glass of warm beer.
David: It’s a warm beer. So you have been warned. That being said, our vocabulary today is all about drinks. So when you go to a restaurant, you will know what to ask for.
Echo: That’s right.
David: Okay let’s get right to it.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
David: Let’s have a closer look at the usage of some of these words and phrases.
Echo: Right. The first word is 啤酒。(Píjiǔ.)
David: Beer.
Echo: 啤酒。(Píjiǔ.)
David: Let’s hear this slowly. It’s second tone and then third tone.
Echo: 啤酒。(Píjiǔ.)[slowly - broken down by syllable]
David: Your voice rises and then falls and rises again.
Echo: 啤酒。(Píjiǔ.)[slowly - broken down by syllable]
David: Now this is going to happen to you if you come to China. You are going to order beer, you are going to forget this lesson and your beer is going to arrive warm.
Echo: Yeah then it will remind you this lesson.
David: Yeah so if you don’t want more beer, the sentence you want to give people is
Echo: 我不喝常温的啤酒。(Wǒ bù hē chángwēn de píjiǔ.)
David: I don’t drink warm beer.
Echo: 我不喝常温的啤酒。(Wǒ bù hē chángwēn de píjiǔ.)
David: And the adjective for warm there is
Echo: 常温。(Chángwēn.)
David: Right which really means room temperature. 对。(Duì.)So once again, room temperature.
Echo:常温。(Chángwēn.)
David: I don’t drink room temperature beer.
Echo: 我不喝常温的啤酒。(Wǒ bù hē chángwēn de píjiǔ.)And for me, 我不喝啤酒。(Wǒ bù hē píjiǔ.)
David: Echo doesn’t like beer.
Echo: So I don’t drink it at all.
David: Yes so Echo is much more likely to order this.
Echo: 可乐。(Kělè.)
David: Cola.
Echo: 可乐。(Kělè.)[slowly - broken down by syllable]
David: Now this is generally cola. If you want Coca-cola, you should ask for
Echo: 可口可乐。(Kěkǒukělè.)
David: Sounds pretty close.
Echo: Very good translation.
David: Coca-cola.
Echo: 可口可乐。(Kěkǒukělè.)
David: Right. If you want ice in that, you should do what the customer or dialogue said.
Echo: Yeah you should say that beforehand.
David: Yeah.
Echo:可乐加冰。(Kělè jiā bīng.)
David: Cola and ice.
Echo: 可乐加冰。(Kělè jiā bīng.)
David: A coke with ice. Another popular soft drink in China is Sprite.
Echo: 雪碧。(Xuěbì.)
David: Sprite.
Echo: 雪碧。雪碧很好喝。(Xuěbì. Xuěbì hěn hǎo hē.)
David: Yes Echo likes Coke and Echo likes Sprite.
Echo: 雪碧很好喝。(Xuěbì hěn hǎo hē.)
David: That’s literally Sprite tastes good.
Echo: And.
David: A healthier alternative to all of this stuff Echo is juice.
Echo: Though I like it better actually 果汁。(Guǒzhī.)
David: Juice.
Echo:果汁。(Guǒzhī.)
David: Although it’s a question of how much of the juice is natural and how much is just water. It’s trivial to the China.
Echo: Yeah that’s right.
David: But if you want to have juice, you can tell people.
Echo: 我喜欢喝果汁。(Wǒ xǐhuān hē guǒzhī.)
David: I like to drink juice.
Echo: 我喜欢喝果汁。(Wǒ xǐhuān hē guǒzhī.)
David: I like to drink juice. So that’s our vocab section. Before we move on, let’s do a quick review. Beer.
Echo: 啤酒。(Píjiǔ.)
David: Cola.
Echo: 可乐。(Kělè.)
David: Sprite
Echo: 雪碧。(Xuěbì.)
David: Juice.
Echo:果汁。(Guǒzhī.)
David: And add ice.
Echo: 加冰。(Jiā bīng.)

Lesson focus

David: Our grammar focus in this lesson is a verb that we saw in the dialogue.
Echo: 加。(Jiā.)
David: To add.
Echo: 加。(Jiā.)
David: In some cases, this means with.
Echo: Right.
David: We saw this sentence in the dialogue.
Echo: 啤酒加冰。(Píjiǔ jiā bīng.)
David: Beer with ice.
Echo: 啤酒加冰。(Píjiǔ jiā bīng.)
David: What they are really asking for is a beer with ice.
Echo: Right.
David: The Chinese way of saying this is much simpler than in English. They are literally saying Beer add ice.
Echo: 啤酒加冰。(Píjiǔ jiā bīng.)
David: So you could also say a coke with ice.
Echo:可乐加冰。(Kělè jiā bīng.)
David: Or maybe even a Whisky on the rocks.
Echo: 威士忌加冰。(Wēishìjì jiā bīng.)
David: This is an area where native English speakers often translate things wrong because we want to use with. In fact, it’s a separate verb.
Echo: Right 加。(Jiā.)
David: When you are cooking, you can also use
Echo: 加。(Jiā.)
David: To talk about adding ingredients. For instance.
Echo: 加点儿盐。(Jiādiǎn er yán.)
David: Add some salt.
Echo: 加点儿盐。(Jiādiǎn er yán.)
David: Or maybe
Echo:加点儿糖。(Jiādiǎn er táng.)
David: Add some sugar.
Echo: 加点儿糖。(Jiādiǎn er táng.)
David: If you want someone to add vinegar.
Echo: 加点儿醋。(Jiādiǎn er cù.)
David: You can ask them that.
Echo: 加点儿醋。(Jiādiǎn er cù.)
David: And on a final note, we will point out that this is also the word that means plus in Chinese.
Echo: Right 加。(Jiā.)
David: So you can say one plus one.
Echo: 1加1.(1 Jiā 1)
David: 2 plus 2.
Echo: 2加2。(2 Jiā 2.)
David: So remember, when you want to order something with something else in Chinese we use
Echo: 加。(Jiā.)

Outro

David: And that’s it for our lesson. As always, we want to remind you, if you have any questions, Echo, is there something you want people to do?
Echo: Right, you can always leave the comment on the site or write to us at contactus@chineseclass101.com
David: Right and we look forward to hearing from you.
Echo: 没错。(Méi cuò.)
David: From Beijing, I am David.
Echo: 我是(Wǒ shì)Echo.
David: Thanks a lot for listening and we will see you on the site.
Echo: Bye bye.
