INTRODUCTION
David: So we’ve got a dialogue here with two characters. One is just waking up when the second comes in and tells him, he’s got to get up in a hurry.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
David: Let’s take a closer look at some of these words and phrases. Like our first word which means fast 快(kuài) or quickly 快(kuài). We see this in the dialogue in the line, 快起来(Kuài qǐlái) Get up quickly. 快起来(Kuài qǐlái). but like other adverbs, we can use it anywhere.
Sylvia: For instance, 快说(Kuài shuō).
David: Speak quickly. 快说.(Kuài shuō.)
Sylvia: Another example 快跑.(Kuài pǎo.)
David: Quickly run away 快跑.(Kuài pǎo.) Run quickly. Now this word 快(Kuài) is closely related to another word in our dialogue, 马上(Mǎshàng) which means immediately. 马上(Mǎshàng) immediately. 马上(Mǎshàng). So you could say get up immediately 马上起床(Mǎshàng qǐchuáng). Or run away immediately 马上跑(Mǎshàng pǎo). So these two words are basically interchangeable.
Sylvia: Right. There is a slight difference there but they are really close.
David: Right. It’s the difference between doing it quickly and doing it right now. And we’ve got another adverb tucked away here too. It’s 刚(Gāng), which means just now 刚(Gāng) or recently.
Sylvia: We hear this in the line 我刚醒.(Wǒ gāng xǐng.)
David: I just woke up 我刚醒(Wǒ gāng xǐng), I just woke up; or 他刚来(Tā gāng lái) he just arrived, 他刚来(Tā gāng lái) he just arrived. So there are three adverbs to remember today. 快, 马上, 刚.(Kuài, mǎshàng, gāng)

Lesson focus

David: Our grammar point today is on the simple pattern we can use to say what.
Sylvia: We are out of something.
David: Right, such as in the dialogue when we are out of time 没时间了(Méi shíjiānle). Listen to that carefully.
Sylvia: 没时间了(Méi shíjiānle).
David: So what’s the grammar pattern?
Sylvia: It’s basically 没(Méi) plus the thing...
David: And then 了(Le). And that 了(Le) is really important. That’s what tells us we’ve just run out of it.
Sylvia: Right.
David: We’re just out of time. 没时间了(Méi shíjiānle). A moment ago, we had time but now there is none left.
Sylvia: 没时间了(Méi shíjiānle). For another example, consider 没钱了(Méi qiánle).
David: I am out of money 没钱了(Méi qiánle). And there is a subtle point here. This doesn’t mean you’ve never had any money. It means you’ve just run out 没钱了(Méi qiánle). The 了(Le) indicates it’s just changed into this state.
Sylvia: Right. I will give you another example, 没事了(Méishìle).
David: There is no problem 没事了(Méishìle). Or literally whatever the problem was, it’s been fixed.
Sylvia: It’s solved.
David: It’s solved. For instance, let’s say you get a phone call from a doctor and they are telling you that a family member has been in an accident. Hopefully they will also tell you 别担心(Bié dānxīn),他没事了(Tā méishìle). Don’t worry about it, he is okay.
Sylvia: 别担心(Bié dānxīn),他没事了(Tā méishìle).
David: Right. They were in an accident. So there was a 事(Shì) but right now 他没事了(Tā méishìle), there is no longer any problem. So that’s our grammar point for today. Remember 没(Méi) plus the object.
Sylvia: Plus 了.(Le.)
David: And you are done.
