David: Welcome to ChineseClass101. I’m David.
Echo: Hi! Da jia hao! 我是(Wǒ shì) Echo.
David: We’ve got Lesson 45 in our Beginner series for you guys, today.
Echo: 第四十五课。(Dì sìshíwǔ kè)
David: This is a lesson all about checking out.
Echo: Right. 退房.(Tuì fáng.)
David: Right, which is not checking out really. So, I don’t know, maybe he’s just putting pressure on them to lower the rates.
Echo: Or to bring the toilet paper back.
David: Yeah. You guys don’t give me more toilet paper. I’m going to switch hotels. I totally would switch hotels if didn’t give me toilet paper. Anyway, we’ve got this dialogue for you. We’re going to take you there in a sec. Before we do that, as always, we want to remind you…
Echo: Come to ChineseClass101.com and sign up for your free lifetime account.
David: Right. That has two of our favorite words in English language: free…
Echo: 免费。(Miǎnfèi.)
David: …and lifetime.
Echo: What is that?
David: It’s your entire life. It’s good for your entire life. So come to the site and sign up. It takes seven seconds. It’s worth it. With that, let’s go on to our dialogue.
甲:这是您的钥匙。(JIǍ: Zhè shì nín de yàoshi.)
乙:谢谢。对了,这儿什么时候退房?(YǏ: Xièxie. Duìle, zhèr shénme shíhòu tuìfáng?)
甲:中午12点以前。(JIǍ: zhōngwǔ shíèr diǎn yǐqián.)
乙:好的。谢谢你。(YǏ: Hǎo de. Xièxie nǐ.)
David: One more time, a bit slower.
甲:这是您的钥匙。(JIǍ: Zhè shì nín de yàoshi.)
乙:谢谢。对了,这儿什么时候退房?(YǏ: Xièxie. Duìle, zhèr shénme shíhòu tuìfáng?)
甲:中午12点以前。(JIǍ: zhōngwǔ shíèr diǎn yǐqián.)
乙:好的。谢谢你。(YǏ: Hǎo de. Xièxie nǐ.)
甲:这是您的钥匙。(JIǍ: Zhè shì nín de yàoshi.)
David: This is your key.
乙:谢谢。对了,这儿什么时候退房?(YǏ: Xièxie. Duìle, zhèr shénme shíhòu tuìfáng?)
David: Thank you. Right, what time is checkout here?
甲:中午12点以前。(JIǍ: zhōngwǔ shíèr diǎn yǐqián.)
David: Before 12:00 o’clock at noon.
乙:好的。谢谢你。(YǏ: Hǎo de. Xièxie nǐ.)
David: Okay. Thank you.
David: We’ve got a lot of interesting vocab, as always, which has to do with hotels. Not that our vocab always has to do with hotels, but in this lesson, it has to do with hotels.
Echo: Yeah.
David: So let’s take you that vocab right now.
Echo: Now, the vocab section.
Male: Now the vocab section.
Echo: 鑰匙(yàoshi) [natural native speed].
David: Key.
Echo: 鑰匙(yàoshi) [slowly - broken down by syllable]. 鑰匙(yàoshi) [natural native speed].
Echo: 門卡(ménkǎ) [natural native speed].
David: Door card.
Echo: 門卡(ménkǎ) [slowly - broken down by syllable]. 門卡(ménkǎ) [natural native speed].
Echo: 對了(duìle) [natural native speed].
David: Oh, right.
Echo: 對了(duìle) [slowly - broken down by syllable]. 對了(duìle) [natural native speed].
Echo: 甚麽時候(shénme shíhòu) [natural native speed].
David: At what time.
Echo: 甚麽時候(shénme shíhòu) [slowly - broken down by syllable]. 甚麽時候(shénme shíhòu) [natural native speed].
Echo: 退房(tuìfáng) [natural native speed].
David: To check out.
Echo: 退房(tuìfáng) [slowly - broken down by syllable]. 退房(tuìfáng) [natural native speed].
Echo: 中午(zhōngwǔ) [natural native speed].
David: Noon.
Echo: 中午(zhōngwǔ) [slowly - broken down by syllable]. 中午(zhōngwǔ) [natural native speed].
Echo: 以前(yǐqián) [natural native speed].
David: Before.
Echo: 以前(yǐqián) [slowly - broken down by syllable]. 以前(yǐqián) [natural native speed].
David: So our vocab section today has two parts. The first is the vocab you’re going to need to check out of a hotel.
Echo: Right.
David: We’ve got a bunch of important words here. The first is the word for “key”…
Echo: 钥匙.(yàoshi.)
David: …which you will have to give back. Or sometimes, they won’t have a key; they’ll have a door card.
Echo: 门卡.(ménkǎ.)
David: That’s literally what it means. It means “door”…
Echo: 门(Mén)
David: …card.
Echo: 卡.(Kǎ.)
David: Okay. So we’ve got some sentences that we think are going to be useful. Echo, what’s the first?
Echo: 我要退房。(Wǒ yào tuì fáng.)
David: I want to check out.
Echo: 我要退房。(Wǒ yào tuì fáng.)
David: Useful stuff. We’ve got a few more. We’re going to let Echo read them and we want you guys to think about what they mean. You should know the words by now.
Echo: Yup. 什么时候退房?(Shénme shíhòu tuì fáng?)
David: When is check out?
Echo: 什么时候退房?(Shénme shíhòu tuì fáng?)
David: When is check out?
Echo: 这是我的钥匙。(Zhè shì wǒ de yàoshi.)
David: This is my key.
Echo: 这是我的钥匙。(Zhè shì wǒ de yàoshi.)
David: “This is my key”. You’re giving back the key. However, if you don’t have a key, you might have to give back the door card.
Echo: 这是我的门卡。(Zhè shì wǒ de mén kǎ.)
David: This is my door card.
Echo: 这是我的门卡. 这是我的收据.(Zhè shì wǒ de mén kǎ. Zhè shì wǒ de shōujù.)
David: This is an advance sentence but you’re going to run into it.
Echo: It’s tricky.
David: Yeah. What’s that word there at the end?
Echo: 收据。(Shōujù.)
David: What are the tones on that?
Echo: 收据。(Shōujù.)
David: First tone, fourth tone.
Echo: 对。收据。(Duì. Shōujù.)
David: So this is my…
Echo: 收据。这是我的收据。(Shōujù. Zhè shì wǒ de shōujù.)
David: If you’ve given them your deposit, this is very important. This is the slip of paper they give you when you check it.
Echo: Right. You go to keep it. Then when you 退房(Tuì fáng), you should give this 收据(Shōujù) back to them.
David: They’re going to ask for it or they’re just going to make gestures, but this is what they want. So if you’ve got it, you can say, “This is my receipt.”
Echo: 这是我的收据。(Zhè shì wǒ de shōujù.)
David: They should give you your deposit back. Okay.
Echo: Where’s my money?
David: So that’s the first part of our vocab section, useful vocab for checking out.
Echo: Right.
David: The second part is all about times. We ran to one little snippet of time in the dialogue.
Echo: 中午十二点。(Zhōngwǔ shí'èr diǎn.)
David: That’s literally noon, 12:00 o’clock.
Echo: 中午十二点。(Zhōngwǔ shí'èr diǎn.)
David: That’s really useful to know if is exactly 12:00 noon.
Echo: Right.
David: Chances are you’re going to be at lunch at noon or you’re not going to need to tell people the time. So we’re going to start, let’s say, let’s start at 8:00 in the morning and we’re going to go over the words we need to know for this. So Echo, how do you say, “It’s 8:00 in the morning?”
Echo: 现在早上八点。(Xiànzài zǎoshang bā diǎn.)
David: Right. So the word for “early morning” is…
Echo: 早上。(Zǎoshang.)
David: It’s 8:00 in the morning.
Echo: 现在早上八点。(Xiànzài zǎoshang bā diǎn.)
David: It’s 9:00 in the morning.
Echo: 现在早上九点。(Xiànzài zǎoshang bā diǎn.)
David: See what we did? We just increased the number. Really easy, as in, “It’s 10:00 in the morning”.
Echo: 现在上午十点。(Xiànzài shàngwǔ shí diǎn.)
David: It’s no longer early morning.
Echo: 早上。(zǎoshàng.)
David: It’s become late morning or literally late, before noon.
Echo: 上午。(shàngwǔ.)
David: Ten in the morning.
Echo: 上午十点。(Shàngwǔ shí diǎn.)
David: It’s now 11:00 o’clock in the morning.
Echo: 现在上午十一点。(Xiànzài shàngwǔ shíyī diǎn.)
David: Then we have lunch, and that’s noon. So you can say, “It’s lunch. It’s noon.”
Echo: 现在是中午。(Xiànzài shì zhōngwǔ.)
David: I’m not working.
Echo: 我要吃饭,不工作。(Wǒ yào chīfàn, bù gōngzuò.)
David: Yes. Then it’s the afternoon. As you guys have probably guessed, we shift from using “before noon”…
Echo: 上午。(shàngwǔ.)
David: …to “after noon”.
Echo: 下午。(xiàwǔ.)
David: So this gives us “one in the afternoon”.
Echo: 下午一点。(Xiàwǔ yīdiǎn.)
David: Two in the afternoon.
Echo: 下午两点。(Xiàwǔ liǎng diǎn.)
David: Three in the afternoon.
Echo: 下午三点。(Xiàwǔ sān diǎn.)
David: Four in the afternoon.
Echo: 下午四点。(Xiàwǔ sì diǎn.)
David: Five in the afternoon.
Echo: 下午五点。(Xiàwǔ wǔ diǎn.)
David: Six in the afternoon.
Echo: 晚上六点。(Wǎnshàng liù diǎn.)
David: “Six in the evening.” That’s the word for “evening” right there.
Echo: 晚上。(Wǎnshàng.)
David: That’s the word for evening.
Echo: 晚上。(wǎnshàng.)
David: Six in the evening.
Echo: 晚上六点。(Wǎnshàng liù diǎn.)
David: Then you can keep going with the evening for quite some time. Okay, to review, before we hit the grammar section, we’ve got the word for early morning.
Echo: 早上。(Zǎoshang.)
David: Before noon.
Echo: 上午。(Shàngwǔ.)
David: Which is maybe after about 9:30 after about 10:00 o’clock. We’ve got the word for “noon”…
Echo: 中午。(zhōngwǔ.)
David: Then after noon.
Echo: 下午。(xiàwǔ.)
David: Finally, we’ve got the word for “evening”.
Echo: 晚上。(wǎnshàng)
David: With that, let’s go to the grammar section.
Male: It’s grammar time.
David: All right. We’re back with a really easy grammar point.
Echo: I like grammar point and I like easy too.
David: Right. If you follow along in the podcast to now, you’ve actually already picked this up probably. It’s about the proper word order when we’re going to put these time phrases together.
Echo: Right.
David: In the dialogue, we learned how to say, “Twelve o’clock noon.”
Echo: 中午十二点。(Zhōngwǔ shí'èr diǎn.)
David: The thing to know is that in Chinese, the word order is exactly the opposite of English.
Echo: Right.
David: In Chinese we say, “Noon twelve.”
Echo: 中午十二点。(Zhōngwǔ shí'èr diǎn.)
David: When we use other time phrases like “eight in the morning”, it’s the same. We really say, “Morning eight o’clock.”
Echo: 早上八点。(Zǎoshang bā diǎn)
David: Evening 6:00 o’clock.
Echo: 晚上六点。(Wǎnshàng liù diǎn.)
David: So we might say, for instance, “Right now, it’s 2:00 in the afternoon.”
Echo: 现在下午两点。(Xiànzài xiàwǔ liǎng diǎn.)
David: Or, “It’s 11:00 in the morning.”
Echo: 现在上午十一点。(Xiànzài shàngwǔ shíyī diǎn.)
David: Right. Now in the dialogue, our sentence was actually a bit trickier. Echo, what was that?
Echo: 中午十二点以前。(Zhōngwǔ shí'èr diǎn yǐqián.)
David: This is the final thing we want to point out.
Echo: 以前。(Yǐqián.)
David: Means “before”.
Echo: Right.
David: And we stick that in Chinese at the very end, after the time.
Echo: Right.
David: So, before 12;00 o’clock.
Echo: 十二点以前。(Shí'èr diǎn yǐqián.)
David: Before 12:00 in the afternoon.
Echo: 中午十二点以前。(Zhōngwǔ shí'èr diǎn yǐqián.)
David: Before 9:00 in the morning.
Echo: 早上九点以前。(Zǎoshang jiǔ diǎn yǐqián.)
David: Before I return the room.
Echo: 我退房以前。(Wǒ tuì fáng yǐqián.)
David: Before I check out.
Echo: 我退房以前。(Wǒ tuì fáng yǐqián.)
David: Okay. That’s worth keeping in mind because, again, this is a case where Chinese word order and English word order are really different.
Echo: Right. Actually, we can introduce a new word here, which is “after”.
David: Yes, we can, and that is…
Echo: 以后。(Yǐhòu.)
David: Right. Before…
Echo: 以前。(Yǐqián.)
David: After.
Echo: 以后。(Yǐhòu.)
David: If you guys have any questions with times, we encourage you to check out the PDF that accompanies this lesson. We’ve got a list of all of the times and we’re going to tell you exactly when you can use them.
Echo: Right.
David: So if you have any questions, check out the PDF. If you still have questions…
Echo: Make sure to leave a comment on the site.
David: Right. We would love to hear from you and we’ll answer any questions that you’ve got. For today, though, this is our lesson. From Beijing, I’m David.
Echo: 我是(Wǒ shì) Echo.
David: Thanks for listening, and we’ll see you again next week.
Echo: 下周见吧.(Xià zhōu jiàn ba.) Bye-bye.
David: Bye.
