Dehua: Never put your chopsticks upright in your rice bowl.
Michael: Chopsticks are usually placed in bowls in that way at altars or funerals.

Michael: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is...
Dehua: 是他负责的(shì tā fùzé de)
Michael: meaning "he is in charge/responsible."
Michael: Let’s break down this phrase.
Dehua: The core of this is 是...的(shì... de).
Michael: That means "it’s." The next word in the phrase is "he."

Michael: That means "to be responsible for." You use this pattern to say who is responsible. You can use it with a name, as well.
Dehua: Yes, for example 这项目是Mary负责的(Zhè xiàngmù shì Mary fùzé de).
Michael: "Mary is in charge of this project." And now, putting it all together, can you give us an example using this phrase?
Dehua: Sure. For example, you can say... 是她负责照顾小朋友的。(Shì tā fùzé zhàogù xiǎopéngyǒu de.)

Michael: That means "text message."
Dehua: You can also use the verb 发(fā) for other digital mediums.
Michael: Such as emails or to post online.
Dehua: For example 发邮件 (fā yóujiàn)
Michael: "to send an email." Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Dehua: Sure. For example, you can say... 明天发短信给我。(Míngtiān fā duǎn xìn gěi wǒ.)
Michael: ... which means "Send me a text message tomorrow."
Michael: Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

Michael: In this lesson, you'll learn about inquiring for information such as the password.
Michael: At work, you often have to ask your co-workers something.
Dehua: A polite way to do this is to use their name, followed by 你知道 (nǐ zhīdào), then your question, then 吗 (ma) ?
Michael: That is the same as saying someone’s name, followed by "do you know," and then your question.
Dehua: After your first question, you can leave out 你知道...吗? (Nǐ zhīdào… ma?)
Michael: "Do you know?" and just ask your questions directly.
Dehua: Shall we hear some examples now?
Michael: I think we should!
Dehua: Monica, 你知道新的Wi-Fi密码是什么吗?(Monica, nǐ zhīdào xīn de Wi-Fi mìmǎ shì shénme ma?)
Michael: "Monica, what is the new Wi-Fi password?"
Dehua: Tom,你知道这个项目什么时候到期吗? (Tom, nǐ zhīdào zhège xiàngmù shénme shíhòu dào qī ma?)
Michael: "Tom, do you know when the deadline of this project is?"
Dehua: Emily,你知道等会儿在哪个房间开会吗? (Emily, nǐ zhīdào děng huìr zài nǎge fángjiān kāihuì ma?)
Michael: "Emily, do you know in which room we will have the meeting later?"
Dehua: Nelson,你知道老板到了吗?(Nelson, nǐ zhīdào lǎobǎn dào le ma?)
Michael: "Nelson, do you know if the boss has already arrived?" And here are some follow-up questions that don’t use the co-worker’s name.
Dehua: 你知道他的会员号码是什么吗?(Nǐ zhīdào tā de huìyuán hàomǎ shì shénme ma?)
Michael: "Do you know his membership number?"
Dehua: 你知道今天的Wi-Fi密码是什么吗?(Nǐ zhīdào jīntiān de Wi-Fi mìmǎ shì shénme ma?)
Michael: "Do you know what today's Wi-Fi password is?"
