KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Amber: Let's have a closer look at the usuage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Victor: The first word/phrase we’ll look at is....
Amber: OK it’s not all sad, because our first word starts out with a happy note.
Victor: Yes, after their day together, Lili declares it
Amber: Yes, today was very开心.
Victor: Yes, 今天很开心。
Amber: Kind of like us saying, ‘I had a great time today.’
Victor: And the overwhelming feeling was that of, they both never realized Shanghai was so big.
Amber: Yes, I think everyone has that feeling, once they actually get a grasp on the magnitude of the place. I too ‘never realized Shanghai was so big!’
Victor: 没想到上海这么大。
Amber: So a great phrase here ‘I didn’t realize’
Victor: 我没想到
Amber: So we can use this in other ways, right? Like perhaps your fans Victor, they listen to you every week, and then one day they meet you, maybe they will say, I never realized you were so handsome!
Victor: Yes, like that. 没想到ni zheme shuai!。
Amber: Which also leads to our next little phrase, which is
Victor: We’ve heard this 这么 before.
Amber: Yes it’s used to mean ‘so’ or ‘such’, to emphasize.
Victor: Yes, so of course, our word for ‘big’ here is ‘da’
Amber: ‘da’ just sounds big. Yes, so yes we all can agree, Shanghai is so big.
Victor: OK but now onto other things. We hear a word of pity… it is 可惜
Amber: Yes and可惜 it’s kind of like ‘what a shame’ or ‘what a pity’, all wrapped up in this one little word.
Victor: Yeah we kind of use可惜 like ‘too bad’ in English.
Amber: Yes, 可惜 Brad Pitt is already married. Or something.
Amber: Ok and next we hear some good news, that Maike will come back.
Victor: Yes, 'come back' or 'to return' is 回来
Amber: And a lot of people will return to China for the same reason as Mike.
Victor: Because there are a lot of 工作机会 We've heard the word for work before, 工作. 机会 means opportunity.
Amber: So, just like he did waaay back when he gave her his 名片, he tells her ‘keep in touch’!
Victor: 保持联络
Amber: 保持 is ‘to keep’
Victor: 联络 is ‘contact’
Amber: And, last, but not least, 慢走
Victor: Yes, 慢走 is a sort of nice farewell. It literally means ‘walk slowly’
Amber: Aw that’s kind of sweet. You can use it kind of like we would say ‘take care’ in English, something like that.

Lesson focus

Amber: OK in today’s grammar, we learn a phrase to to say, ‘I’m leaving tomorrow’.
Victor: 我明天要走了。
Amber: So, broken down ‘I tomorrow + the verb ‘yao’, which here means ‘to be going to’ do something, then the word for ‘to leave’
Victor: 走
Amber: Yes and finally the le particle. Here the le particle is part of a grammar pattern that tells us the something is about to happen, or going to happen in the near future, soon. In this case, leaving china.
Victor: Yes, you will often hear people say ‘我要走了。’
Amber: It means, I’m leaving. As in you are about to do it.
Victor: Yes.
Amber: OK now we have another sentence, using a word that we have learned before in other grammar lessons.
Victor: Yes, that is 还. And in this sentence the 还 is like how we use ‘still’ in English.
Amber: Yes, ‘hai’ is used to emphasize the ongoing duration of a situation or state. The sentence we hear it used in here is
Victor: 我还要学汉语呢。
Amber: I still want/need to study Chinese. But Victor, what is the ‘ne’ at the end of that sentence for. We’ve heard a few of these particles, but this is a new one.
Victor: Well the ‘ne’ is sometimes used at the end of a declarative sentence to confirm a fact.
Amber: So here the fact is that he still needs to study Chinese.
Victor: Yes. It’s sort of our way of adding intonation, just in a different way.
Amber: And we hear another 还 sentence here too.
Victor: 你还回来吗?
Amber: Literally translated it’s something like ‘You will still come back?’, but maybe in English it’s more like how we would say ‘Are you going to come back?’
Victor: OK and speaking of which... this is the last lesson.
Amber: The last lesson of this Gengo set. But there will be lots more to come. So for now, it's zaijian, manzou, and baochi lianxi.
Victor: Yes, Goodbye, take care, and keep in touch!
Amber: And keep up the good work.
Victor: See you in China!
