Hi, guys! Welcome back. I’m Kate. Today, we are going to learn three famous Chinese poems. Let’s just get started!

All right, the first one, the first one is…

(jìng yè sī)

(jìng yè sī)

(Jìng yè sī) means “Thoughts in the Silent Night,” Thoughts in the Silent Night. This one is very, very popular in China. I guess, maybe, everyone knows it.

So, 静 (jìng) means “silent,” silent, 静 (jìng).

夜 (Yè) means “night,” night, 夜 (yè).

思 (Sī), 思 (sī) means “thoughts,” thoughts.

So, “Thoughts in the Silent Night” 静 夜 思 (jìng yè sī).

Very good!

Well, actually, this poem was written by a very famous Tang Dynasty poet, 李白 (lǐ bái), 李 白(lǐ bái). I guess, some of you might know him. And, this poem expresses his loneliness and homesickness when he gazes at the bright moon.

All right now, I will show you the whole poem.

(chuáng qián míng yuè guāng)

(yí shì dì shàng shuāng)

(jǔ tóu wàng míng yuè)

(dī tóu sī gù xiāng)

Well, 床 前 明 月 光 (chuáng qián míng yuè guāng) actually means “Moonlight reflects off the front of my bed.”

床 前 (Chuáng qián), 床 前 (chuáng qián) means “the front of my bed.”

床 (Chuáng), 床 (chuáng) means “bed.”

前 (Qián), 前 (qián) means “the front of,” the front of.

So 床 前 (chuáng qián) means “the front of my bed,” the front of my bed.

(Míng yuè) means “moon,” moon.

光 (Guāng) means “light,” so 明 月 光 (míng yuè guāng) means “moonlight,” moonlight.

Okay, let’s try again…

(chuáng qián míng yuè guāng)

(chuáng qián míng yuè guāng)

Very good!

Let’s go on.

(yí shì dì shàng shuāng)

(yí shì dì shàng shuāng)

(Yí shì dì shàng shuāng) means “It seems like the frost on the ground,” it seems like the frost on the ground.

疑 是 (Yí shì), 疑 是 (yí shì) means “it seems like,” it seems like, 疑 是 (yí shì).
