Hi Olivia,

Thank you for the help! That makes sense and answers my question.

I just looked at the updated pdf on this site and it doesn't have the translation issue. I was using a version of the pdf that I had downloaded into iTunes several months ago.

Thanks,

Johnny

Hi Johnny,

Good question! That is because the character 着 indicates the continuation of an action or a state, hence the present progressive tense.

It is the same as 女人在拿着地球仪。

However, if we omit the 着, 女人在拿地球仪 could mean that "the woman is taking the globe". 拿着 is a better expression for something that can be held in one's hands.

And we're sorry about the PDF mistake, we cannot locate the issue in the pdf files, maybe it was fixed a bit earlier. If the mistake still exists could you please send us a screenshot image via info@chineseclass101.com?

Thanks a lot! And keep it up!

Hi,

I am having trouble understanding how the phrase: nǚrén ná zhe dìqiúyí (女人拿着地球仪) is present progressive tense. Shouldn't there be a 在 in there somewhere? (Also, as an aside, in the PDF it translates: 女人拿着地球仪 as "The man is living in Sydney, Australia.", which is from the previous video lesson.)

Hi Dawei,

Sorry about the late reply. That was a very good question you asked. For the two sentences you gave, I'd say there is no difference with using 正在 or 在 there. As you probably know that they are both progressive markers. However 正在 is probably a stronger form to represent progressive event than 在。

There are also some other major differences between them.

1. 正在 can not be used to experss repetitive-progressive or reoccuring events. For example, 你又在骗人。(you are lying agin.)Here, use 在 only.

2. 正在 can not be used in habitual progressive event. For example

他每天在学习中文。You can't say 他每天正在学习中文。

Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks

Best,

Jane:smile:

Hello,

I haven't heard an answer to this question. Would someone please explain 在 vs. 正在?

thx!

What difference is there between these two sentences?

演讲者正在会议上演讲。

演讲者在会议上演讲。

I noticed that many of the sentences use only 在, but others use 正在 to denote

the continuous present tense. Are they totally interchangeable?
