INTRODUCTION
David: Welcome to chineseclass101.com. I am David.
Echo: Hi, 大家好(Dàjiā hǎo), 我是(Wǒ shì) Echo。
David: And we are here with lower beginner, season 1, Lesson 16.
Echo: Thanks for a Great Chinese Party.
David: Right, it was a great party. Thank you for inviting us. We had a good time.
Echo: Yeah now it’s time for客气。(Kèqì.)
David: Now it’s time for us to go. So we are going to say goodbye in casual Mandarin.
Echo:没错。(Méi cuò.)
DIALOGUE
A:谢谢你邀请我们来。(Xièxiè nǐ yāoqǐng wǒmen lái.)

David: Once more, a bit slower.
A:谢谢你邀请我们来。(Xièxiè nǐ yāoqǐng wǒmen lái.)
B:真高兴你们能过来!(Zhēn gāoxìng nǐmen néng guòlái!)
A:今天的晚饭太好吃了。(Jīntiān de wǎnfàn tài hàochī le.)
B:你们喜欢就好。(Nǐmen xǐhuān jiù hǎo.)
A:下次来我们家做客。(Xià cì lái wǒmen jiā zuòkè.)
B:好的,一定。(Hǎo de, yídìng.)
David: And now with an English translation.
Echo: 谢谢你邀请我们来。(Xièxiè nǐ yāoqǐng wǒmen lái.)
David: Thank you for inviting us.
Echo: 真高兴你们能过来!(Zhēn gāoxìng nǐmen néng guòlái!)
David: We are really happy you came.
Echo: 今天的晚饭太好吃了。(Jīntiān de wǎnfàn tài hàochī le.)
David: The dinner tonight was delicious.
Echo: 你们喜欢就好。(Nǐmen xǐhuān jiù hǎo.)
David: Glad that you liked it.
Echo: 下次来我们家做客。(Xià cì lái wǒmen jiā zuòkè.)
David: Next time, come to our place as a guest.
Echo: 好的,一定。(Hǎo de, yídìng.)
David: Sure absolutely.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Echo: Yeah it’s always important to say 谢谢(Xièxiè) to Chinese people.
David: Yes and invite them to come to your party next time because otherwise when they have their party again, they don’t invite you.
Echo: Yeah. We have a saying in Chinese called 礼尚往来(Lǐshàngwǎnglái). It is like, if they treat you well, you should treat them well back.
David: Yeah so you’ve got to give the invitation. You don’t need to hold the party but our vocab today, it’s about parties and the invitations. Let’s get to it.
VOCAB LIST
Echo: 邀请。(yāoqǐng.)
David: To invite.
Echo: 邀请, 邀请, 高兴。(yāoqǐng, yāoqǐng, gāoxìng.)
David: Happy.
Echo: 高兴, 高兴, 过来。(gāoxìng, gāoxìng, guòlái.)
David: To come over.
Echo: 过来, 过来, 好吃。(guòlái, guòlái, hǎochī.)
David: Tasty.
Echo: 好吃, 好吃, 喜欢。(hǎochī, hǎochī, xǐhuān.)
David: To like.
Echo: 喜欢, 喜欢, 下次。(xǐhuān, xǐhuān, xiàcì.)
David: Next time.
Echo: 下次, 下次, 做客。(xiàcì, xiàcì, zuòkè.)
David: To be a guest.
Echo: 做客, 做客, 一定。(zuòkè, zuòkè, yídìng.)
David: Definitely.
Echo: 一定, 一定。(yídìng, yídìng.)
David: Let’s take a closer look at some of these words and phrases. The first one I always used to get it wrong is next time.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Echo: 下次。(xiàcì.)
David: Next time.
Echo: 下次(xiàcì) And the opposite of 下次(xiàcì) is 上次.(Shàng cì.)
David: Right. This is confusing. Echo, do you have any way for people to remember that up is last and down is next?
Echo: 对、在中文里 所有的下都是(Duì, zài zhōngwén lǐ suǒyǒu de xià dōu shì) future 上 都是(Shàng dōu shì) past.
David: Yeah the way I finally remembered it was thinking of a calendar. Right one of those flip up calendars.
Echo: Yeah.
David: Because the past is higher up in the calendar. So…
Echo: 对、这个也有用。(Duì, zhège yěyǒu yòng.)
David: Tip from chineseclass101. Echo, what’s the next word we want to highlight?
Echo: 做客。(Zuòkè.)
David: To be a guest.
Echo: 做客。(Zuòkè.)
David: Right. So this is a verb.
Echo: 对、这个很客气。(Duì, zhège hěn kèqì.) It’s very, very polite. You can say 你来我家做客吧!(Nǐ lái wǒjiā zuòkè ba!)
David: Come to my home and be a guest.
Echo: 对, 就是我会对待你像对待客人一样。(Duì, jiùshì wǒ huì duìdài nǐ xiàng duìdài kèrén yīyàng.)
David: Yeah. So I will treat you like I treat a guest. The next word we want to look at is
Echo: 做客。(Zuòkè.)
David: To be a guest.
Echo: 做客。(Zuòkè.)
David: And this is really polite.
Echo: 没错, 你可以告诉你的朋友 来我家做客。(Méi cuò, nǐ kěyǐ gàosù nǐ de péngyǒu lái wǒjiā zuòkè.)
David: Come to my home and be a guest.
Echo: 对, 就是我会对你很客气, 对你像对待客人一样。(Duì, jiùshì wǒ huì duì nǐ hěn kèqì, duì nǐ xiàng duìdài kèrén yīyàng.)
David: Yeah and it has the same 客(Kè) as 客气(Kèqì) right because it’s a very polite word.
Echo: 对。(Duì.)
David: There are a lot of words that are like this though.
Echo: 比如说我刚才说的 客人。(Bǐrú shuō wǒ gāngcái shuō de kèrén.)
David: Guest.
Echo: 客人。(Kèrén.)
David: Right.
Echo: 或者是 客户。(Huòzhě shì kèhù.)
David: Customer.
Echo: 客户。(Kèhù.)
David: Right. And these words are very polite.
Echo: 或者是 客厅。(Huòzhě shì kètīng.)
David: Which is the living room, right it’s the room where you receive guests.
Echo: 没错, 客厅。(Méi cuò, kètīng.)
David: Okay. Moving on, the next word we want to highlight is
Echo: 一定。(Yīdìng.)
David: Definitely.
Echo: 一定。(Yīdìng.)
David: And this means definitely, absolutely, for sure. You just got to come to the party.
Echo: 没错, 你一定要来。(Méi cuò, nǐ yīdìng yào lái.)
David: Right.
Echo: 然后你可以说 一定。(Ránhòu nǐ kěyǐ shuō yīdìng.)
David: Yes.
Echo: You can use this word alone to promise.
David: Yeah it’s an answer that means for sure.
Echo: 没错, 一定。(Méi cuò, yīdìng.)
David: Right. For instance, if Echo asks you the question
Echo: 你会每天学中文吗?(Nǐ huì měitiān xué zhōngwén ma?)
David: You can answer
Echo:一定。(Yīdìng.)
David: Right.
Echo: 或者是 一定不会。(Huòzhě shì yīdìng bù huì.)
David: Right or if your boss asks you, will this be done by 5 o’ clock.
Echo: 这个五点一定会做完吗?(Zhège wǔ diǎn yī dìng huì zuò wán ma?)
David: You can say
Echo: 一定。(Yīdìng.)
David: And then leave at 4:30.
Echo: 啊! 天呀! 那你一定会 丢了你的工作。(A! Tiān ya! Nà nǐ yīdìng huì diūle nǐ de gōngzuò.)
David: Yeah anyway those three words are probably the most difficult here. Once again
Echo: 下次, 做客, 一定。(Xià cì, zuòkè, yīdìng.)
David: And with that, let’s get to our grammar section. It’s grammar time. Our grammar point today is about the character

Lesson focus

Echo: 就。(Jiù.)
David: This is an adverb and it means then.
Echo: 对, 它有很多的意思。(Duì, tā yǒu hěnduō de yìsi.)
David: Right but the meaning we want to talk about today is the meaning of then.
Echo: 没错(Méi cuò) In the dialogue, we hear this word here. 你们喜欢就好。(Nǐmen xǐhuān jiù hǎo.)
David: If you like it, then that’s good, then that’s what matters.
Echo: 你们喜欢就好。(Nǐmen xǐhuān jiù hǎo.)
David: And we hear it a lot used in this way where it’s used especially before a single character adjective at the end of a sentence.
Echo: 唔, 没错, 比如说 好, 你知道就好。(Wú, méi cuò, bǐrú shuō hǎo, nǐ zhīdào jiù hǎo.)
David: As long as you know, then good.
Echo: 你知道就好。(Nǐ zhīdào jiù hǎo.)
David: Your knowing is what matters.
Echo: 对, 或者是成, 你们来就成, 别带什么东西。(Duì, huòzhě shì chéng, nǐmen lái jiù chéng, bié dài shénme dōngxī.)
David: If you come, that’s enough, don’t bring anything.
Echo: 你们来就成, 别带什么东西。(Nǐmen lái jiù chéng, bié dài shénme dōngxī.)
David: Right. So you will hear this again and again. This pattern, it’s a simple one but we run into it so often. Question for you Echo, can we use this in the negative?
Echo: We can but we don’t put 不(Bù) before 就。(Jiù.)
David: Or after 就。(Jiù.)
Echo: Yeah.
David: Right we actually have to – to negate this, we have to negate the main verb in the sentence.
Echo: 没错, 比如说 你不知道就好。(Méi cuò, bǐrú shuō nǐ bù zhīdào jiù hǎo.)
David: If you don’t know, then that’s what matters. Don’t say that to someone.
Echo: 对, 你不知道就好。(Duì, nǐ bù zhīdào jiù hǎo.)
David: Right. All of our sample sentences, we can do with this. For instance, we can say, if they don’t like it, that’s good.
Echo: 唔, 他们不喜欢就好, 这个很奇怪。(Wú, tāmen bù xǐhuān jiù hǎo, zhège hěn qíguài.)
David: It’s the revenge sentence or also if you don’t come, that’s great, don’t bring anything.
Echo: 唔, 你们不来就成, 别带什么东西。(Wú, nǐmen bù lái jiù chéng, bié dài shénme dōngxī.)
David: You don’t want to go at the party with or without things.
Echo: 或者你可以说 你们不来就成吧, 东西寄过来。(Huòzhě nǐ kěyǐ shuō nǐmen bù lái jiù chéng ba, dōngxī jì guòlái.)
David: Yes. Send them with your friend. So yeah it is a simple pattern. Remember that the character
Echo: 就。(Jiù.)
David: Can be put in front of single character adjectives like
Echo: 就好, 就成。(Jiù hǎo, jiù chéng.)
David: At the end of a sentence. So it’s a simple pattern. Just remember that the character
Echo: 就。(Jiù.)
David: Can be placed in front of some adjectives and verbs at the end of the sentence as in the examples
Echo: 就好, 就成。(Jiù hǎo, jiù chéng.)

Outro

David: Right. And with that, we are at the end of our lesson today. Before we go, we wanted to remind you about our voice recording tool.
Echo: 唔,这个非常非常有用。(Wú, zhège fēicháng fēicháng yǒuyòng.)
David: Yeah it’s a good way of helping make sure you are getting the tones right.
Echo: 对, 你们只要到我们的网站上(Duì, nǐmen zhǐyào dào wǒmen de wǎngzhàn shàng), chineseclass101.com 然后按一下哪个按钮, 就成了。(Ránhòu àn yīxià nǎge ànniǔ, jiù chéngle.)
David: In the premium learning center, you click the button, you will hear a sound. It will record yourself and see what you sound like.
Echo: 没错。(Méi cuò.)
David: With that, we are out of time. From Beijing, thanks for listening. I am David.
Echo: 我是(Wǒ shì) Echo。
David: And we will see you on the site.
Echo:我们网上见吧!(Wǒmen wǎngshàng jiàn ba!) Bye bye.
