儿子: 爸爸,星期天我想去海洋公园看海豚表演。 (ÉRZI : bàba, xīngqītiān wǒ xiǎng qù hǎiyáng gōngyuán kàn hǎitún
biǎoyǎn.)
Brandon: Dad, I wanna go see the dolphin show in the ocean park on Sunday.
爸爸: 儿子,爸爸星期天要出国,没有时间陪你去玩。妈妈陪你去吧。(BÀBA : érzi, bàba xīngqītiān yào chūguó, méiyǒu shíjiān péi nǐ qù wán. māma péi nǐ qù ba.)
Brandon: Son, Dad has to go abroad Sunday, I don't have time to go with you. Mom will go with you, ok?
儿子: 爸爸为什么总是出差?而且总是在星期天? (ÉRZI : bàba wèishénme zǒngshì chūchāi? érqiě zǒngshì zài xīngqītiān?)
Brandon: Dad, why are you always on a business trip? And why is it always on Sundays?
爸爸: 我也不想占用星期天工作。可是我的工作太忙了。爸爸回来补偿你 (BÀBA : wǒ yě bù xiǎng zhànyòng xīngqītiān gōngzuò. kěshì wǒ de gōngzuò tài máng le. bàba huílai bǔcháng nǐ.)
Brandon: I don't want to take up Sunday to work either. But my work is too busy. Dad will make it up to you when I come back.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yinru: Brandon, have you heard about the show 爸爸去哪儿? (Bàba qù nǎ'er?)
Brandon: Yes, and I know it was really popular. But I never got to watch it. I know that the characters of the shows are five guys who have kids.
Yinru: That’s right. The fathers are famous actors, models, and former Olympic champions. Their kids are all between 4-7 years old. In this show, they were sent to the areas far from the city and were given challenges to survive in extremely harsh conditions.
Brandon: Like no shower, no food, no modern technology?
Yinru: And no wife too. Most of the people on the show were able to get things easily in their lives, as they are somewhat rich.
Brandon: But in the show, they have to survive by themselves, without getting any help. And also with their son or daughter, too. How did the show go?
Yinru: At first, the fathers were very awkward. They didn’t know how to cook, what clothes to put on their kids, or why the kids were always crying. But they got much better later on.
Brandon: I think this is what many fathers need. They have to take some time from their busy work schedule to be with their children. It’s good if they can play with them and get to know them if they want to be part of their child precious childhood memories.
Yinru: I agree! I think that’s also why this show was so popular. They're going to have more seasons in the next few years, so check out this show if you haven’t yet.
Brandon: It’s a great way to improve your Chinese too, listeners. Okay, now let’s move on to the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Brandon: Let’s take a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. what’s the first word?
Yinru: The first word we’re introducing here is 总是.(Zǒng shì.)
Brandon: It means “always.”
Yinru: Please note that in Chinese, when you use 总是 in a sentence, it usually sounds negative, like you're complaining about something.
Brandon: Can you give us some examples?
Yinru: 她总是迟到, 还喜欢找各种理由. (Tā zǒng shì chídào, hái xǐhuān zhǎo gè zhǒng lǐyóu.)
Brandon: “She's always late, and she likes to make all kinds of excuses.” And the next sentence?
Yinru: 最近总是下雨, 我哪儿也去不了. (Zuìjìn zǒng shì xià yǔ, wǒ nǎ'er yě qù bùliǎo.)
Brandon: “It’s always raining, so I can’t go anywhere.”
Yinru: I don’t like rain either, because 下雨的时候我总是心情不好.(Xià yǔ de shíhòu wǒ zǒng shì xīnqíng bù hǎo.) “When it rains, I’m always in a bad mood.”
Brandon: Okay. What’s the next word?
Yinru: The next word we want to mention is 占用. (Zhànyòng.)
Brandon: It means something like "to take up space" or "to take up time."
Yinru: When I was at school, my teacher used to say 占用大家五分钟的时间, 我来说两句. (Zhànyòng dàjiā wǔ fēnzhōng de shíjiān, wǒ lái shuō liǎng jù.)
Brandon: It means “I’m going to take up 5 minutes of your time to say a few words.” Ok, can we have some more examples?
Yinru: 这个钢琴占用了整个房间. (Zhège gāngqín zhànyòngle zhěnggè fángjiān.)
Brandon: “This piano takes up the whole room.”
Yinru: Sometimes you may see a sign that reads, 私家车位, 请勿占用. (Sījiā chēwèi, qǐng wù zhànyòng.)
Brandon: It means, “Private parking space, please do not take it.” Okay, now onto the grammar.

Lesson focus

Brandon: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to use the transitive verb...
Yinru: 陪 (Péi)
Brandon: meaning ‘to do something with someone else’. can you explain the meaning of this word first?
Yinru: Of course. 陪 (Péi) means “to do something with someone else”. The closest English equivalent could be “to accompany” or “to escort.”
Brandon: It implies that someone is doing it as a favor, because they sacrifice their own time, right?
Yinru: Right. And it's widely used in everyday Chinese, and sometimes in formal Chinese as well.
Brandon: Now let’s talk about how to use it.
Yinru: First, say 陪 (Péi), then the pronoun or person's name, then 去 (Qù), then a place name.
Brandon: Can you give us an example?
Yinru: Sure. Here’s a sample sentence, 我要陪我妈妈去医院 (Wǒ yào péi wǒ māmā qù yīyuàn). 我妈妈 (Wǒ māmā) means “my mother”, and 医院 (Yīyuàn) means “hospital”.
Brandon: So the English translation of this sentence should be “I need to go to the hospital with my mother.” Okay, what’s the second way to use this word?
Yinru: The second way to use it is, 陪 (Péi) + pronoun or someone’s name + action verb.
Brandon: So how do I say “Come eat with me.”?
Yinru: 陪我吃饭吧 (Péi wǒ chīfàn ba). 我 (Wǒ) means “I”, 吃饭 (Chīfàn) is the action verb meaning “to eat”
Brandon: That sounds easy. And what’s the third usage?
Yinru: The third is a combination of the first and second one. 陪 (Péi) + pronoun or someone’s name + 去 (Qù) + place name + action verb.
Brandon: Can you give us an example?
Yinru: 我星期天要陪我的好朋友去北京面试. (Wǒ xīngqítiān yào péi wǒ de hǎo péngyǒu qù běijīng miànshì.)
Brandon: “I'll accompany my friend to Beijing for a job interview on Sunday.”
Yinru: Here, it has 我的好朋友 (Wǒ de hǎo péngyǒu), meaning "my friend, ,and 北京 (Běijīng) as a place name. Then, we have 面试 (Miànshì) the action verb meaning "to have a job interview"
Brandon: If you remember the last pattern, you won’t forget the first two.
Yinru: Yes, that’s right. It 's really not that difficult. Let’s look at how we used this pattern in the dialogue. In the dialogue, the father said, 爸爸星期天要出国,没时间陪你玩. 妈妈陪你去吧. (Bàba xīngqítiān yào chūguó, méi shíjiān péi nǐ wán. Māmā péi nǐ qù ba.)
Brandon: "I have to go abroad Sunday and I don't have time to go with you. Your mom will go with you though, ok?"
Yinru: 陪 (Péi) is used twice here. The first one is, 陪你玩 (Péi nǐ wán). First 陪 (Péi), second, the pronoun 你 (Nǐ), then the verb 玩 (Wán) meaning ‘to play’ or ‘to hangout.’.
Brandon: Okay. What about the second one?
Yinru: The second one is 妈妈陪你去 (Māmā péi nǐ qù). 陪 + 你 + 去 (Péi + nǐ + qù). In this sentence, the place name was not mentioned because the other person can figure it out from the context.
