Hi, everybody! In this lesson, you'll learn some important phrases for Christmas in China and some valuable cultural tips.
In Chinese, Christmas is called...
圣诞节
[slowly] 圣诞节
Christmas is celebrated like in the West, but with Chinese customs.
Santa Claus, for instance, is usually depicted with a musical instrument. People often celebrate the day in fun ways, like going to the movies in groups or singing karaoke.
On 圣诞节, or "Christmas Day," Chinese people greet each other by saying 圣诞快乐!
(slow) 圣诞快乐!
It means "Merry Christmas!"
When you meet someone on Christmas day, be sure to greet them with this phrase.
Chinese people celebrate the holiday with their own special events and customs. A popular food to eat on Christmas is...
猪肚
(slow) 猪肚
This means "crispy pork belly."
Chinese people enjoy their favorite dishes on Christmas, such as crispy pork belly. It's said that nobody can prepare crispy pork like the Chinese!
Let's wrap up this lesson by recapping what you've learned. Listen to the words and repeat after me.

Well done! [pause] Here's a fun fact! The Chinese have incorporated many customs of their own into their Christmas celebrations, such as the “Christmas Fruit.” Do you know what this is?
An apple is a popular Christmas gift in China. This is because, in Chinese, the word for "apple" sounds the same as “Christmas Eve.” Christmas Eve is 圣诞夜 (Shèngdànyè), while “apple” is 圣诞果 (Shèngdàn guǒ). Special wrappings and decorations turn common apples into expensive gifts.
You just learned about how Chinese people celebrate Christmas and some important facts about the holiday.
