Taiwanese Mandarin Survival Phrases Lesson 5: Goodbye
In this lesson, you will learn how to say “Goodbye.”
The most common expression for saying “Goodbye” is 再見(zài jiàn).
Let’s break it down by tone:
First we have 再(zài). This is in fourth tone.
Last we have 見(jiàn). This is in fourth tone.
Let’s break it down by meaning:
再(zài) means “again.”
見(jiàn) means “see.”
Literally, it means “again see.” But in English, the phrase translates to “See you again,” or “I will see you again.”
Altogether, we have 再見(zài jiàn).
Listen again, one more time, slowly:
[Slow] 再見(zài jiàn).
[Normal] 再見(zài jiàn).
You can use this phrase in most situations. You can also use this when saying goodbye on the phone.
You can also say 明天見(Míngtiān jiàn), meaning “I will see you tomorrow.”
Let’s break it down by tone:
First we have 明(Míng). This is in second tone.
Next we have 天(tiān). This is in first tone.
Last we have 見(jiàn). This is in fourth tone.
Now let’s break it down by meaning:
明天(Míng tiān) means "tomorrow."
