Echo: 朋友们,大家好 (Péngyǒumen, dàjiā hǎo)
David: David here! Upper Intermediate Season 1 , Lesson 2 - Resorting to Desperate Measures at the Chinese Car Yard
David: Hello everyone! I'm David, and welcome to ChinesePOD101.com.
Jane: With us, you'll learn to speak Chinese with fun and effective lessons.
David: We also provide you with cultural insights...
Jane: ...and tips you won't find in a textbook.
D:Today we brought you a dialogue that is largely based on a real life situation happened in Beijing a while ago
J: 是的。当然对话有一点儿夸张。不过很有意思。就当笑话听了。 (Shì de. Dāngrán duìhuà yǒu yīdiǎn er kuāzhāng. Bùguò hěn yǒuyìsi. Jiù dāng xiàohuà tīngle.)
D: Yeah, it's pretty funny. It's a dialogue between two friends. One of whom just bought a car.
J: 没错。他在给他的朋友讲他买车的经历。 (Méi cuò. Tā zài gěi tā de péngyǒu jiǎng tā mǎi chē de jīnglì.)
D:that's right. So in this story, you are going to learn how to describe the sound things make with Chinese onomatopoeia.
J: 是的。象声词。各种各样的象声词。 (Shì de. Xiàngshēngcí. Gè zhǒng gè yàng de xiàngshēngcí.)
D: yeah. many of them. and of course, you maybe even get a couple of tips on how to beat others in getting something you really want after hearing our dialogue.
J: 也许吧。但在我们听对话之前,我们还要提醒正在收听的你 (Yěxǔ ba. Dàn zài wǒmen tīng duìhuà zhīqián, wǒmen hái yào tíxǐng zhèngzài shōutīng de nǐ)
D: that's right. let us remind you, if you are not already, please logon to our website www.chineseclass101.com to register. That's only take less than 20 second.
J: and you'll get a life long account which will provide everything you ever want from learning Mandarin.
D: sounds like a great deal to me. Now, let's go to the dialogue.
Dialogue
English Host: Now let’s hear it with the English translation.
A: 我昨天买了一辆车。 (A: Wǒ zuótiān mǎi le yī liàng chē.)
David: I bought a car yesterday.
B: 哟,恭喜。听说从下月起就要摇号购车了。 (B: Yo, gōngxǐ. tīngshuō cóng xiàyuè qǐ jiù yào yáo hào gòu chē le.)
David: Congratulations! I hear that starting next month a lottery system will limit the number of cars sold.
A: 可不是嘛。你没看见这两天车行里的人呢,乌泱乌泱的。 (A: Kěbushì ma. Nǐ méi kànjiàn zhè liǎng tiān chēháng lǐ de rén ne, wū yāng wū yāng de.)
David: That's right. Haven't you seen all those people at the dealerships lately? What a crowd!
B: 都跟你一样,生怕以后买不上了呗。(B: Dōu gēn nǐ yīyàng, shēngpà yǐhòu mǎi bù shàng le bei.)
David: They're just like you—worried they won't be able to buy one later.
A: 你不知道,当时还有两个人和我抢。我一狠心,二话不说,掏出钥匙就在车身上划了一下。 (A: Nǐ bù zhīdào, dāngshí hái yǒu liǎng ge rén hé wǒ qiǎng. Wǒ yī hěnxīn, èrhuàbùshuō, tāochūyàoshi jiù zài chē shēn shàng huá le yīxià.)
David: There were two other people who were competing for my car. So I thought for a moment then took out my keys and scratched the body of the car.
B: 你这是跟谁过不去呀? (B: Nǐ zhè shì gēn shéi guòbuqù yā?)
David: What did you do that for?
A: 我问,这车还有人要吗?结果他们都不出声儿了。 (A: Wǒ wèn, zhè chē hái yǒu rén yào ma? Jiéguǒ tāmen dōu bù chūshēng ér le.)
David: I asked, anyone else still want this car? They all went quiet.
B: 算你狠! (B: Suàn nǐ hěn!)
David: You're tough!
Post Conversation Banter
D: That was a tough guy!
J: 真的吗?不过我希望我们的listeners不要跟他学。 (Zhēn de ma? Bùguò wǒ xīwàng wǒmen de listeners bùyào gēn tā xué.)
D: Apparantly it was the case before the lottery system for purchasing cars in BJ came into force.
J: 好像是挺疯狂的。(Hǎoxiàng shì tǐng fēngkuáng de.) But what'even worse was after the lottery system started.
D: It was reported that in the first month after the system was in placed, there were nearly 200,000 applications received in comparison to the 20,000 licenses quota.
J: 天啊!20万的申请人。(Tiān a!20 Wàn de shēnqǐng rén.) However, it was also reported that not every applicant was geniunely interested in buying a new car.
D: That's right. It was like the whole family and relatives were encouraged to go and register for a place in order to increase the chance of getting the license.
J: but according to the offical report, in the first month, there were only about 12% of the lucky people who actually did go and redeem their licenses. Don't know what happened to the rest of the 82% lucky people.
D: Whatever happened to them, I seriously think BJ people should stop driving on the roads since the traffic is just horrific everyday.
J: 没错。北京的交通太拥挤了。 (Méi cuò. Běijīng de jiāotōng tài yǒngjǐle.)
D: Indeed. But let's not worry too much about that right now. We have here some very colloquial expressions in our vocabulary which we will take you to it now.
J: 好的。 (Hǎo de.)

Vocabulary and Phrase Usage
David: Let's have a closer look at the usuage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Echo: The first word/phrase we’ll look at is....
J: 摇号 (yáo hào)
D: the lottery system that is specifically used in the regulation of pucharsing cars.
J: 摇号 (yáo hào)
D: Literally means to shake the number. right?
J: 是的。(Shì de.) We call the whole regulation as 摇号购车。(Yáohào gòuchē.)
D:so it is the lottery system to purchse cars.
J: 摇号购车 (Yáohào gòuchē)
D: the word 购 (Gòu) here came from the word
J: 购买 (Gòumǎi)
D: formal way of saying to buy.
J: 购买 (Gòumǎi)
D: Can we have a sentence using 摇号? (Yáohào?)
J: 这次买房是摇号购买,就是说要抽中了才能买。 (Zhè cì mǎifáng shì yáohào gòumǎi, jiùshì shuō yào chōu zhōngle cáinéng mǎi.)
D: This property sale is limited by lottery, which means you can only buy if your number's chosen.
J: 注意这个句子中有一个多音字,中 (Zhùyì zhège jùzi zhōng yǒu yīgè duō yīnzì, zhōng)
D: Right, sometimes it's pronunced as zhong, the first tone as in 中国 (Zhōngguó);in this sentence, it is pronunced as zhong, the fourth tone as in 中奖 (Zhòngjiǎng) to win the prize。
J: 下一个词是车险 (Xià yīgè cí shì chēxiǎn)
D: car insurance
J: 车险 (Chēxiǎn)
D: car insurance. It is short for
J: 汽车保险。 (Qìchē bǎoxiǎn.)
D: there are so many phrases in Chinese that are 4 characters, but people just shorten them to 2 characters. right?
J: 是的。这我要提醒大家注意和这个词搭配的动词,上 (Shì de. Zhè wǒ yào tíxǐng dàjiā zhùyì hé zhège cí dāpèi de dòngcí, shàng)
D: that's right. very important, the verb to go with the phrase is 上 as in up
J: 上车险,上保险 (Shàng chēxiǎn, shàng bǎoxiǎn)
D: to buy car insurance or insurance
J: 上车险,上保险 (Shàng chēxiǎn, shàng bǎoxiǎn)
D: to buy car insurance or insurance. In China is it compulsory to buy insurance after purchasing a new car?
J: 是的。购买新车时必须同时购买车险。 (Shì de. Gòumǎi xīnchē shí bìxū tóngshí gòumǎi chēxiǎn.)
D: When buying a new car, you'd have to buy insurance too.
J: 购买新车时必须同时购买车险。(Gòumǎi xīnchē shí bìxū tóngshí gòumǎi chēxiǎn.)
D: When buying a new car, you'd have to buy insurance too. Well, I am in no rush to buy a car in China. Plus I probably won't have the luck to 中奖。 (Zhòngjiǎng.)
J: 下面几个词都是比较口语化的。很有意思。 (Xiàmiàn jǐ gè cí dōu shì bǐjiào kǒuyǔ huà de. Hěn yǒuyìsi.)
D: So very colloquial words. What's the first one we are going to learn then?
J: 一狠心 (Yī hěnxīn)
D: to be determined
J: 一狠心 (Yī hěnxīn)
D: to be determined. Our listeners probably know the word 狠 when it is used to describe someone as cruel or harsh. very negative one.
J: 狠心就是 (Hěnxīn jiùshì) cruel hearted. 一狠心就是当事情发生了,你在很短的时间里下了决心。(Yī hěnxīn jiùshì dāng shìqíng fāshēngle, nǐ zài hěn duǎn de shíjiān lǐ xiàle juéxīn.)
D: Yeah, usually it's when something happens that is not in your favor, you made a rather painful decision just to end the dilemma.
J: 我一狠心,就把那车买下来了。 (Wǒ yī hěnxīn, jiù bǎ nà chē mǎi xiàláile.)
D: I made a painful decision and bought that car.
J: 我一狠心,就把那车买下来了。 (Wǒ yī hěnxīn, jiù bǎ nà chē mǎi xiàláile.)
D: I made a painful decision and bought that car. So maybe the car was too expensive or it was beyond your affordability. But you still decided to splash it out in the end.
J: 是呀。我去逛街的时候,经常有这样一狠心的时候发生。 (Shì ya. Wǒ qù guàngjiē de shíhòu, jīngcháng yǒu zhèyàng yī hěnxīn de shíhòu fāshēng.)
D: The next very colloquial phrase is
J: 过不去 (Guòbuqù)
D: can't get over with
J: 过不去 (Guòbuqù)
D: can't get over with. here it's actually a verb + complement structure. But the phrase 跟 (Gēn)+ pronoun + 过不去 (Guòbuqù) is a fixed expression to mean can't get along with someone.
J: 没错。口语中我们经常用。such as 你怎么老是跟我过不去。 (Méi cuò. Kǒuyǔ zhòng wǒmen jīngcháng yòng.Such as nǐ zěnme lǎo shì gēn wǒ guòbuqù.)
D: Why do you always single me out? why can't we just get along?
J: 你怎么老是跟我过不去? (Nǐ zěnme lǎo shì gēn wǒ guòbuqù?)
D: How come we just can't get along? what about the sentence in our dialogue?
J: 你这是跟谁过不去呀? (Nǐ zhè shì gēn shéi guòbuqù ya?)
D: Why did u do that for? So here we have to look at the context, th speaker didn't understand why his friend scratched the new car with his keys. So we translated as why did u do that for?
J: 是的。(Shì de.) If you see your friend looking upset and didn't something unsual, and you are not sure why he is upset, you can ask this 你这是跟谁过不去呀? (Nǐ zhè shì gēn shéi guòbuqù ya?)
D: what's our next word, jane?
J: 生怕 (Shēngpà)
D: to be so worried about
J: 生怕 (Shēngpà)
D: to be so worried about. so this is like 害怕 (Hàipà), but on a deeper scale.
J: 是的。她一晚上都在复习,生怕第二天考试不过。 (Shì de. Tā yī wǎnshàng dū zài fùxí, shēngpà dì èr tiān kǎoshì bùguò.)
D: She stayed up to review all night, so worried she wouldn't pass the exam.
D: Our next word is a four character expression
J: 二话不说 (Èrhuà bù shuō)
D: without a word
J: 二话不说 (Èrhuà bù shuō)
D: without a word. interesting you used 二 (Èr) instead of 一 (Yī) there.
J: 是有点儿奇怪。you could say 看到眼前这情景,他二话不说,转身就走了。 (Kàn dào yǎnqián zhè qíngjǐng, tā èrhuà bù shuō, zhuǎnshēn jiù zǒule.)
D: upon seeing what's in front of him, without a word, he turned around and left.
J: 看到眼前这情景,他二话不说,转身就走了。 (Kàn dào yǎnqián zhè qíngjǐng, tā èrhuà bù shuō, zhuǎnshēn jiù zǒule.)
D: Upon seeing what's in front of him, without a word, he turned around and left. Poor guy, I wonder what he saw.
J: I dont know what he saw, but i can see we have a very interesting grammar section coming up next.
D: Indeed very interesting one. Let's get to it.

Lesson focus

D: So in this section, we are going to talk about a whole category of words that makes a lot of noises.
J: mm,象声词 (Xiàngshēngcí)
D: that's right. the Chinese onomatopoeia.
J: 我们的对话中就有一个词,乌泱乌泱的。 (Wǒmen de duìhuà zhōng jiù yǒu yīgè cí, wū yāng wū yāng de.)
D: a whole crowd
J: 乌泱乌泱的。(Wū yāng wū yāng de.)
D: a big crowd. So in Chinese, this word is often used to describe a big crowd of people. It's like the sound of a big crowd being pushed back and forward.
J: 国庆节的时候广场上人乌泱乌泱的。 (Guóqìng jié de shíhòu guǎngchǎng shàng rén wū yāng wū yāng de.)
D: During the national holidays, there were a lot of people in the square. I've seen that. It's incredable. So do you use it to describe other crowds apart from human?
J: 一般不会。乌泱乌泱的只是用来形容人的。 (Yībān bù huì. Wū yāng wū yāng de zhǐshì yòng lái xíngróng rén de.)
D: Now let's teach our listeners so more of this type of words.
J: 好的。比如说形容小鸟的叫声,我们说树上的小鸟叽叽喳喳的叫个不停。 (Hǎo de. Bǐrú shuō xíngróng xiǎo niǎo de jiào shēng, wǒmen shuō shù shàng de xiǎo niǎo jījichāchā de jiào gè bù tíng.)
D: the birds in the trees are chirping non-stop.
J:树上的小鸟叽叽喳喳的叫个不停。 (Shù shàng de xiǎo niǎo jījichāchā de jiào gè bù tíng.)
D: what about the sound of the thunder?
J: 雷声是轰隆轰隆的。 (Léi shēng shì hōnglóng hōnglóng de.)
D: Ah, it does sound like the thundering.
J: 轰隆轰隆的。 (Hōnglóng hōnglóng de.)
D: what about the firworks going off. During the Chinese New Year, the sound is just deafening.
J: 到处都是噼里啪啦的鞭炮声。 (Dàochù dōu shì pīlipālā de biānpào shēng.)
D: Ah, this onomatopoeia is different from the other ones. It's got four different sounds.
J: 对呀。(Duì ya.) not all of the 象声词 (Xiàngshēngcí) are in the form of abab type 轰隆轰隆 (Hōnglóng hōnglóng), we had aabb type 叽叽喳喳 (Jījichāchā), now we have abcd type 噼里啪啦 (Pīlipālā). we also have two characters ones.
D: right, can we have an example of that?
J: 比如说他扑通一下跳进水里去了。 (Bǐrú shuō tā pūtōng yīxià tiào jìn shuǐ lǐ qùle.)
D: He jumped into the water. Here you used 扑通 (Pūtōng) to describe the sound he made when he jumped into the water.
J: 他扑通一下跳进水里去了。(Tā pūtōng yīxià tiào jìn shuǐ lǐ qùle.) Or you can say 虽然已经过了半天,他的心还扑通扑通地跳个不停。 (Suīrán yǐjīngguòle bàntiān, tā de xīn hái pūtōng pūtōng de tiào gè bù tíng.)
D: Although it's already long past, his heart is still beating hard.
J: 这里我用扑通扑通形容心跳很快的声音。 (Zhèlǐ wǒ yòng pūtōng pūtōng xíngróng xīntiào hěn kuài de shēngyīn.)
D: It gives a feeling that someone is nervous or excited about something.
J: 是的。 (Shì de.)
D: very interesting. Well, we'd love to share with you some more Chinese onomatopoeia with you, but our time is running out. But don't worry, you will be able to find more of this type of words with sample sentences on our pdf file lesson notes.
J: 赶快登陆我们的网站吧 (Gǎnkuài dēnglù wǒmen de wǎngzhàn ba) www.chineseclass101.con where you can find many more very useful learning tools to help you with your Chinese study.
D: For now though, this is D here
J: 我是Jane,我们在北京,下次见。 (Wǒ shì Jane, wǒmen zài běijīng, xià cì jiàn.)
D:see you next time.

The audio doesn't match the transcripts.

In the audio, David and Echo are talking. In the transcripts, the speakers are listed as "J" and "D," and the audio and the lines of the transcript do not match at all.

I noticed this issue with lesson 1 of this course as well.

你好,林馬克,

上車險和購買車險是一樣的意思。購買這個動詞比較普遍,正式一點。上這個動詞有一點非正式的感覺,適合用於朋友之間。

大家好,

請問,「上車險」和「購買車險」的意思一樣嗎? 據我所知,上車險等於 get car insurance,但購買車險卻是 buy car insurance,是否這樣?

Hi Tarik,

Good question! 老是 means "always".

So if we break down the sentence, the following will be the literally meanings:

我 / 真 / 不知道 / 他 / 为什么 / 老是 / 跟我 / 过不去

I / really / don't know / he / why / always / with me / not get along

btw, I think the translation of 国庆节 as national holidays isn't quite right. 国庆节 is the national day (of the people) on October 1st.
