INTRODUCTION
David: Welcome to chineseclass101.com. I am David.
Echo. (Dàjiā hǎo, wǒ shì Echo.)
David: And we are here with upper intermediate, season 1, Lesson 4 - All You Need is Love in China.
(Méi cuò, zhège tǐng hǎo de zhège huàtí, chōngmǎnle ài.)
David: Ah, it’s filled with Chinese relationship stuff.
Echo: 差不多。 (Chàbùduō.)
David: Maybe this is up your alley and maybe it’s not, but we’ve got a dialogue that’s filled with breakfast foods. So if you are here in Beijing, it is actually going to be pretty useful.
Echo: 没错。(Méi cuò.)
David: Unless you sleep until noon.
(Nà jiù méi bànfǎle.)
David: We’ve got the dialogue that takes place between a husband and wife at home. So let’s just go right to it.
Echo: 好的。(Hǎo de.)
DIALOGUE
(Lǎopo, zánmen zǎo diǎn chī shénme yā?)
(Màipiàn zhōu ba.)
(Kěshì zánmen de guō dōu shì zāng de, yǐjīng hǎo jǐ tiān méi shuāle.)
(Nà jiù hē niúnǎi ba.)
(Kě niúnǎi zǎojiùhē guāng le.)
(Nǐ zuówǎn bù shì yào qù mǎi de ma?)
(Shì, kě wǒ fāxiàn zánmen yīdiǎnr xiànjīn dōu méiyǒu le. Qǔ qián de huà, hái děi zǒu chū zánmen xiǎoqū. Wǒ xián tài yuǎn le.)
(Nà jiù hē báikāishuǐ ba, zài jiā diǎnr fēngmì, wèidao yīnggāi yě bùcuò.)
(Tài yǒu chuàngyì le. Bǎobèir, wǒ ài nǐ.)
David: Once more, a bit slower.
(Lǎopo, zánmen zǎo diǎn chī shénme yā?)
(Màipiàn zhōu ba.)
(Kěshì zánmen de guō dōu shì zāng de, yǐjīng hǎo jǐ tiān méi shuāle.)
(Nà jiù hē niúnǎi ba.)
(Kě niúnǎi zǎojiùhē guāng le.)
(Nǐ zuówǎn bù shì yào qù mǎi de ma?)
(Shì, kě wǒ fāxiàn zánmen yīdiǎnr xiànjīn dōu méiyǒu le. Qǔ qián de huà, hái děi zǒu chū zánmen xiǎoqū. Wǒ xián tài yuǎn le.)
(Nà jiù hē báikāishuǐ ba, zài jiā diǎnr fēngmì, wèidao yīnggāi yě bùcuò.)
(Tài yǒu chuàngyì le. Bǎobèir, wǒ ài nǐ.)
David: Now let’s hear it with the English translation.
(Lǎopo, zánmen zǎo diǎn chī shénme yā?)
A: Honey, what shall we eat for breakfast?
(Màipiàn zhōu ba.)
B: How about oat porridge?
(Kěshì zánmen de guō dōu shì zāng de, yǐjīng hǎo jǐ tiān méi shuāle.)
A: But all the pots are dirty. They haven't been washed for days.
(Nà jiù hē niúnǎi ba.)
B: Then how about some milk?
(Kě niúnǎi zǎojiùhē guāng le.)
A: But we finished the milk ages ago.
(Nǐ zuówǎn bù shì yào qù mǎi de ma?)
B: Weren't you gonna go buy some last night?
(Shì, kě wǒ fāxiàn zánmen yīdiǎnr xiànjīn dōu méiyǒu le. Qǔ qián de huà, hái děi zǒu chū zánmen xiǎoqū. Wǒ xián tài yuǎn le.)
A: Yeah, but I discovered we're out of cash. I'd have to walk out of our compound to get more. It's too far.
(Nà jiù hē báikāishuǐ ba, zài jiā diǎnr fēngmì, wèidao yīnggāi yě bùcuò.)
B: Then let's drink boiled water. We can add some honey. It should taste alright.
(Tài yǒu chuàngyì le. Bǎobèir, wǒ ài nǐ.)
A: You are so creative. Baby, I love you.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
David: In short, it’s an extremely lazy couple who don’t want to do the dishes.
(Méi cuò, wǒ hěn qìngxìng tāmen méiyǒu háizi.)
David: Yeah. However, they missed the secret, which is to 外卖。 (Wàimài.)
(Wú........ Yībān zǎofàn yībān hěn shǎo yǒu sòng wàimài de, hǎoxiàng Màidāngláo kěyǐ.)
David: Well, I am surprised they are out of bed early enough to have breakfast if they are just lazy. They could just sleep and then go for lunch. Anyway, our vocab today is all about breakfast foods.
(Duì, suǒyǐ wǒmen gěi dàjiā hěnduō xuǎnzé.)
VOCAB LIST
Echo: 麦片粥。 (màipiànzhōu.)

(Dòu zhī, Dòuzhī.)
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
David: And I have to say as the western representative, most of the stuff does not sound that appetizing. The best is probably the first.
Echo: 麦片粥。 (Màipiàn zhōu.)
David: Oat porridge.
(Wú, màipiàn zhōu, qǐng zhùyì zhège dìfāng suīrán yǒu “zhōu” zhège zì, dànshì wǒmen shuō de bìng bùshì nèige zhōngguó de yǒu mǐ de nǎ zhǒng zhōu.)
David: Yes. There is no rice in this. It’s not dough.
(Nǐ kàn qǐlái fēicháng xīngfèn.)
David: It’s not 粥 (Zhōu) with oat slab stuck in it. It actually is full on porridge.
Echo: 麦片粥。(Màipiàn zhōu.)
David: Although China doesn’t have brown sugar so.
(Wú….. Duì, nǐ kěyǐ mǎi jìnkǒu de.)
David: Yeah. So you are going to be stuck with honey on that. Next up, we have this deep fried dough stick.
Echo: 油条。 (Yóutiáo.)
David: Literally oil stick.
(Yóutiáo, bèi nǐ fānyì jiù xiǎndé hěn bù kě'ài.)
David: Well it’s actually really good but…
Echo: Ah …… (Rúguǒ nǐ chī dào bùshì yòngdì gōu yóu zuò de dehuà dōu kěyǐ.)
David: Yeah. If it’s not made with gutter oil, you are okay but it’s – it can’t be good for you.
(Wú, wǒ juédé zǎoshang chī yóu zhá de dōngxī hěn bú shūfú.)
David: Hmm you may want to step up and get Wontons.
Echo: 馄饨。 (Húntún.)
David: And so this is southern style. Southern style 饺子 (Jiǎozi) really.
(A! Wǒ juédé bù fēn nánběi fāng.)
David: I mean they are not the same as dumplings.
Echo: No, no, no (Bù yīyàng, zhè shì yǒu hěn dà de qūbié de.)
David: What is that difference Echo?
(Zhè nǐ bùshì shuō āiyā! Wǒ xiànzài hěn è, zhōngwǔle.)
David: Yes.
(Wǒ chī yī wǎn húntún, zhè kěnéng bùduì, yīnwèi..... Yīnwèi húntún ne, nèige xiàn hěn xiǎo.)
David: So yeah, so it’s not a standalone meal but I mean we are talking about the difference between these in 饺子.(Jiǎozi.)
Echo: 对。(Duì.)
David: So telling us when you eat one and when you eat the other is not telling us the difference.
(Wǒ mǎshàng jiù yào shuō de zhège, húntún nèige xiàn hěn xiǎo, bǐ jiǎozi de xiàn xiǎo duōle, zhè shì dì yī gè.)
David: Okay so they don’t have as much stuffing.
(Duì, zhège ne..... Tāmen nǎ yīgè yàngzi bù yīyàng, húntún ne shì gānggāng shuō de xiàn hěn xiǎo, húntún de pí hěnduō, suǒyǐ nǐ zhǔyào shi chī nàgè pí chī nǎge wèidào. Dàn jiǎozi de pí bǐjiào xiǎo, jiùshì ránhòu.....)
David: Okay yes that’s true. I mean they’ve got a lot more of the kind of pasta surrounding, mainly to loose in the soup.
(Duì, jiù hǎoxiàng yǒu yīgè miàn piàn zài tā zhōuwéi.)
David: Yeah.
David: Well I mean you can get 水饺. It’s, I think, this is a case...
Echo: No, no, no… (Āi!) no, no 有一个问题...... (Yǒu yīgè wèntí......)
David: This is like Eskimos and snow, there are… everyone else is going to look and say, oh that’s a 饺子 and you are like, no, no it’s a wonton.
Echo: No, No .. (Nǐ shuō de shuǐjiǎo….. Shuǐjiǎo bùshì bǎ jiǎozi fàng zài shuǐ lǐ gěi nǐ chī de, shuǐjiǎo shì......)
David: Yes you can, yes you can.
Echo: No, no, no, no, no…. (Shuǐjiǎo shì yòngshuǐ zhǔ chūlái de jiǎozi, zhège jiào shuǐjiǎo.)
David: No, no I am thinking of 一种水饺 (Yī zhǒng shuǐjiǎo) the Sichuanese amazing, amazing….
(Duì, dàn nǎge shuǐjiǎo de shuǐ zài lǐmiàn de yìsi yě bùshì shuō wǒ bǎ yīgè lián tāng dài shuǐ de jiǎozi sòng gěi nǐ chī, bùshì nǎge yìsi, suīrán nǎge lǐmiàn shì yǒu zhī de.)
David: Okay I think the lesson for listeners is that technically there is a separate word for this and don’t get Chinese people started on the differences between 饺子 (Jiǎozi) and wontons.
(Bàituō! Wǒ gǎn bǎozhèng duō shǔ de tīngzhòng péngyǒumen dōu míngbái wǒ shuō de shì shénme, shuǐjiǎo shì yòngshuǐ zhǔ chūlái de jiǎozi, bǐrú xiàng zhēng jiǎo shì yòng guō zhēng chūlái de jiǎozi, zhǔyào yī zhǒng zuòfǎ.)
David: Yeah okay but it’s – okay, okay, okay we understand. You care passionately about this. It’s an okay breakfast choice.
(Duì, húntún, zhège bùcuò.)
David: Yeah I recommend skipping the mung bean juice.
(Dòuzhī, wǒ cónglái méi hēguò dòuzhī, zuòwéi yīgè běijīng rén wǒ cónglái méi hēguò dòuzhī.)
David: But soybean milk is pretty good.
Echo: 啊 ! (A! Dòujiāng.)
David: Yes it’s different. Don’t be fooled.
Echo: 对,小心! (Duì, xiǎoxīn! Xiǎoxīn!)
David: Let’s do that again. The first is
Echo: 豆汁。 (Dòuzhī.)
David: And the second is
Echo: 豆浆。 (Dòujiāng.)
David: We recommend #2.
Echo: 对。(Duì.)
David: You are on your own if you go for the Mung Bean juice.
(Wú, nǐ hēguò yīcì jiù bù huì..... Bù huì zài nòng cuòle.)

Lesson focus

David: Anyway, our grammar point today is about the past future tense. So let’s get to it. It’s grammar time. Now we said we were going to talk about the past future tense.
(Guòqù jiānglái shì.)
David: Right. Although this is a bit of a lie because Chinese, there is not really a tense system. It’s aspectual.
(Duì, duì, méi cuò.)
David: Right. And so there isn’t a past future tense.
(Dànshì háishì yǒuyī zhǒng fāngfǎ, nǐ kěyǐ biǎodá chū guòqù nǐ xiǎng zuò yīgè wèilái yào zuò de shì.)
David: Right. So what we want to talk about in this lesson is how to say that in the past something was going to happen in the future.
Echo: Right.
David: And it’s actually really easy. In the dialogue, we ran into it in this line.
(Nǐ zuó wǎn bùshì yào qù mǎi de ma?)
David: Weren’t you going to buy some yesterday evening in the future?
Echo: Right.
David: Or yesterday, weren’t you going in the future to buy some.
(Nǐ zuó wǎn bùshì yào qù mǎi de ma?)
David: Right. So we have the standard way of putting something into the future.
Echo: Hmm, 要。(Yào.)
David: And we are tagging it with a time noun.
Echo: 对, 昨晚。 (Duì, zuó wǎn.)
David: Right and this makes it subjunctive.
(Duì, zhè liǎng gè…...)
David: Weren’t you going to do this in the future.
(Dōu shì quē yī bùkě.)
David: Yeah.
(Duì, zhè liǎng gè dōu shì quē yī bùkě.)
David: Let’s take a look at a few more examples.
(Nǐ zuótiān bùshì yào shuā wǎn ma?)
David: Weren’t you going to wash the dishes yesterday.
(Nǐ zuótiān bùshì yào shuā wǎn ma? Nǐ liǎng tiān qián bùshì yào qù mǎi niúnǎi ma?)
David: Weren’t you going to buy milk two days ago.
(Nǐ liǎng tiān qián bùshì yào qù mǎi niúnǎi ma? Nǐ nèitiān bùshì yào qǔ qián ma?)
David: On that day, weren’t you going to take out money.
(Nǐ nèitiān bùshì yào qǔ qián ma?)
David: On that day, weren’t you going to take out money and it’s not actually saying, on that day you do it. Its saying on that day, weren’t you going to do this.
Echo: 没错。 (Méi cuò.)
David: Right.
(Nǐ shì yào qù zuò.)
David: Right. So it’s the future of the past.
David: Yeah and this is so much easier than in English. The important thing is, you can’t forget to put the time.
(Duì, jiùshì zhège guòqù de shíjiān.)
David: Yes. A: lot of people think they can omit it if it’s clear from context but you can’t.
(Wú wú wú, duì, zhège dìfāng rúguǒ nǐ méiyǒule nèige guòqù de shíjiān cí.......)
David: Yeah.
(Zhège jùzi jiù biàn chéngle yīgè pǔtōng de jiānglái shì.)
David: Yes so even if everyone knows you are talking about yesterday, you still have to stick it in.
Echo: 没错。 (Méi cuò.)
David: Otherwise it’s confusing.
Echo: 对。(Duì.)
David: Let’s hear our dialogue sentence one more time.
(Nǐ zuó wǎn bùshì yào qù mǎi de ma?)
David: Yesterday evening, weren’t you going to go out and buy some. If we take out that,
Echo: 昨晚。(Zuó wǎn.)
David: We are left with
(Nǐ bùshì yào qù mǎi de ma?)
David: Aren’t you going to go out and get some.
(Jiù biàn chéngle yīgè pǔtōng de jiānglái shì.)
David: Yes. So this is really important but other than that, it’s also really easy.
Echo: 对。 (Duì.)

David: Or complain about it, you can send us an email and we will set you up with a free trial class.
Echo: 没错。(Méi cuò.)
